From the Principal's Office

Term 1 has drawn to a close. Students have completed assessment and teachers have finalised progress reports that will be issued at the end of the week electronically via email and QParents. If you are unable to download the report and would like a paper copy please contact the office. For environmental reasons we issue reports electronically and aim to reduce paper copies but are happy to assist if families are unable to access the internet.
Interschool Summer sport competition culminates with a finals day which was scheduled for this Thursday but sadly has been cancelled due to the latest COVID outbreak in Brisbane. I do however, want to congratulate all those students who have made it to finals and thank all the students and coaches involved in the summer season. Last week students signed up for the new Cooper Cup competition that will be held in Term 2 – Futsal, Netball and Rugby 7s are on offer for this term. Students will train throughout the term and then compete in a Gala Day in Hervey Bay in week 10. More details about the Gala Day will follow throughout the term. It was good to see many students signing up.
As the weather will hopefully start to cool over the next term please ensure that students are in correct jumpers and uniform. The current contract for the supply of uniforms with Lowes runs until the end of 2021. The school is monitoring stock levels with Lowes and we have an agreement with Lowes to allow the incoming supplier, Shawline to commence production and sale of these items when they are no longer available at Lowes. We will advise parents when this occurs through our regular channels of communication such as Facebook and this newsletter. There may be periods where items may not be available and if this is the case parents will be advised and it will be managed in accordance with the school uniform policy.
I wish you all a very safe and enjoyable Easter break.
Robyn Kent

This form is not activeBullying - NO WAY!
Friday, 19th March was National Day of Action Against Violence and Bullying. Buddy Bear and the Better Buddies Anti-Bullying Committee of students were out and about at morning tea spreading the important message that “it isn’t BIG to make others feel SMALL’. Our students were encouraged to wear their school anti-bullying t-shirts and partake in two random acts of kindness. These shirts are not compulsory to purchase but are available at our school office for $10 and students can wear them on designated days throughout the year. We are proud to say that the shirts were an initiative of some of our past students who designed them. BNSHS are also conducting a dance competition that is ongoing throughout 2021. Students are being encouraged to either duplicate or choreograph their own dance moves to the chorus of the catchy song “Treat People With Kindness” by Harry Styles.
Mrs Jensen, Better Buddies Coordinator

All day paddle
The 12 Recreation students had a lovely day out on Monday at Bucca for their all day canoeing excursion. The conditions were perfect with little wind and flat water for miles. Students did a 6km paddle in the morning and then finished off the day with some fun games – 'brandy', 'blowing in the wind', races and the favourite 'battleships'. A great way to end our canoeing unit. The students will be focusing on completing their First Aid Assessment next term. Have an awesome Easter all.
Miss Tibbey, Recreation Coordinator

Year 7 Japanese end of term reward
After a term of hard work and assessment, students enjoyed a rewards games lesson and played Sushi Jenga. Year 7 students had to use plastic chopsticks to manipulate and move the Jenga pieces without letting the tower collapse and count the pieces in Japanese. Students enjoyed a bit of a break from a busy Term 1. Next lesson, students combined classes and played ‘Yakyuu’, Japanese Baseball on the oval and had great fun! Congratulations to my Year 7 Japanese class for achieving high results through hard work and a positive attitude, with 80% of students in the class achieving an A-C.
Mr Williams, Japanese teacher

Leaving them in her Wake...
The 2021 Australian Rowing Championships were held at Lake Barrington, Tasmania last week from March 22-28. The international rowing course is situated on the 50m deep manmade Lake Barrington, which forms part of the Mersey-Forth hydro power scheme. Competitors from more than 100 schools across the nation, mostly exclusive private schools from capital cities battled it out to establish the 2021 national champions. 1600 competitors rowed in extreme conditions: tent wrecking winds, heavy rains and daily minimum and maximum temperatures as low as 6-16 degrees Celsius. Some days the weather was so extreme that racing was called off for a few hours while the worst of the weather passed before racing resumed. Rowers from the Australian Institute of Sport were also competing at the event in the open age categories.
Jayne Wake proudly represented Bundaberg North State High school and Bundaberg Rowing Club in single, double and quad events. Her quad event was her pet event as she enjoys the dynamics of rowing in team events, it was also the event in which she achieved her best result. The quad crew consisted of Jayne, another Bundaberg rower and two rowers from Maroochy Rowing Club. Before the nationals, these four girls trained separately at their own clubs and only managed to train together as a crew on three occasions, once at Bucca and twice at Maroochy. The quad made it into the national semi-finals which was just their fifth row together as a team and only missed out on making it to the national finals by 1.2 seconds, making them the 10th fastest Under 17 Women's quad crew in the nation! Jayne and her doubles partner also made it into their semi final which placed them as the 13th fastest Under 17 Women's Double crew. It was an extraordinary opportunity to compete at such a high level representing Bundaberg North High and has given Jayne even more drive to continue to strive to achieve her best in rowing in the future.

Dry ice, ice baby
Solids! Liquids! Gases!
Year 7 students have been looking at the changing states of matter. Dry ice helped them to understand sublimation. Dry ice moves from a solid to a gas without going through the liquid phase. Students were very interested in the process and excited to watch what developed.
Mrs O'Kelly, Science Teacher

Cross Country
The North High Cross Country run was held on Tuesday 30th March. It was great to see so many students involved and giving it their best shot. Congratulations to the winning students in each year level, who will be announced at a future assembly.
Mr Thatcher, Sports Coordinator

Thanks, honey!

A big thank you to Angela and David Black from Welcome Creek Honey for their generosity in donating more of their wonderful honey to our Breakfast Club.
Every morning our students have the option of honey, jam or vegemite on toast. This is to ensure that every student at Bundaberg North High can start their school day well.
Next term, our students will also be offered delicious spaghetti & cheese jaffles thanks to the success of our Feed Appeal Rural Schools Grant.

2021 Next Step Survey
The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in 2020. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.
Between April and June, all our students who completed Year 12 last year can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.
Thank you for your support of the Next Step survey in 2021.
Further information on Next Step, including results from previous years, is available online at www.qld.gov.au/nextstep or on toll free telephone 1800 068 587.
