From the Principal's Office

We have reached the halfway mark of Term 3 and are well underway with planning for the 2026 school year. Many of the priorities for the next school year are being evaluated with a student focus at the forethought of our considerations.
Recently we held an extremely successful Subject Expo Evening which incorporated a Senior Schooling education session for our Yr 10 students. This particular group of students have engaged in work experience, have engaged in subject conversations, met with the teachers of Senior Subjects and will soon begin their SET Planning process. This comprehensive plan will provide students and their carers, with the necessary information to make informed and considered decision regarding their final two years of schooling. A timetable will then be generated which best meets the needs of the school community, taking on board this information. I wish to thank all of the parents and carers who engaged with our staff on the Subject Expo. Such support really provides students with the best opportunity for success. I encourage all Yr 10 Parents as well to engage in the SET Plans so that clear and targeted plans are developed to support student achievement over the next two years.
Part of our planning entails analysing our School Opinion Survey data. This information provides us with feedback from parents, students and staff and also supports our strategic direction. I thank everyone who has completed this survey and encourage you to take a few minutes to complete this if you haven't yet found time.
We are also providing a comprehensive transition and orientation program for future students. all Yr 4-6 students in our enrolment zone have been provided with the opportunity to engage in either Transition visits or Immersion Days. During our Transition Days we have provided the information for our scholarship program, which is well worth consideration. I have been impressed with the behaviour and enthusiasm of our future Bundaberg North Students whose love of learning and willingness to engage has been evident. If you have a future student or know of someone who has missed this information, please ask parents to reach out to our friendly office staff for further details.
All students are well underway with assessment and are regularly referring to our Assessment Literacy Placemats, which provide clarity around the skills required for academic success within each unit of work. I encourage students to provide their best effort, take on teacher feedback and utilise our school values in this process so that they can demonstrate achievement which is indicative of a student's full potential. I know that our Senior Students are deeply engaged in their final pieces of assessment prior to their final term. Soon they will engage in Mock Exams, which will prepare them for the External Exams in Term 4. I wish all of our students the very best and encourage students and parents to seek support, from Year Level Coordinators or other support staff if needed, especially at this busy time of year.
Our priority for our Yr 12 students is to ensure that firstly all students attain a QCE and then have the necessary results or qualifications to engage in further study or employment.
I am very proud of the breadth of information and experiences we provide for our students. I note that we have performed exceptionally well on the sports field with some positive results for a number of students who have gained selection in regional teams. Our Instrumental Music students continue to shine with their performances at the recent Eisteddfod and community events.
We have student leadership applications due soon and encourage interested students to engage in this process. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate leadership potential and further develop the skills necessary as young members of society. Many of these skills are those which employers value most.
I thank the community for their ongoing support of our values and look forward to a productive end of the term where our results will demonstrate the full potential of Bundaberg North Students.

Host of Regional Deputies Network Meeting
This week, our school proudly hosted 17 High School Deputy Principals from across the Bundaberg District for a regional training day. We were honoured to be selected as the host school, thanks to the strong Instructional Leadership practices being implemented by our leadership team, including our dedicated Heads of Department.
Our school is leading the way in using classroom visits and student learning conversations to inform and enhance our teaching strategies. This student-centred approach, aligned with our school vision to develop independent and lifelong learners, was a key focus of the day and received positive recognition from visiting staff. The training reinforced the impact of our work and highlighted our commitment to excellence in education.
The day was made even more special by the positive comments from our guests, who praised the calm and welcoming environment, as well as the well-mannered and delightful Year 12 students who escorted them throughout the day. A highlight was the group of students who confidently participated in interviews with the School Supervisor in front of the visiting Deputy Principals—an impressive demonstration of our positive school culture and student pride.
Subject Selections are Open
Subject selections for students in Years 7 to 10 are now open and can be completed through OneSchool. Students who do not have access to a device at home are welcome to use the library computers to make their selections.
All subject choices must be submitted by Friday, 29 August. Year 10 students will have their selections confirmed during their SET Plan Interviews in Weeks 9 or 10, while students in Years 7 to 10 will be notified of their 2026 elective subjects in Term 4.
2025 Presentation Night
Save the Date – Thursday 23 October 2025!
This year’s awards ceremony will feature several exciting updates, including the introduction of new awards that recognise students who actively contribute to building a positive school culture. From 2025 onwards, all year levels will have access to an All Rounder Award, celebrating students who demonstrate effort and involvement across multiple areas of school life. Additionally, Senior Students will no longer need to nominate for Major Awards, as these will be determined using data submitted by school staff. A key benefit of this change is that all extracurricular involvement will now be recorded in OneSchool and reflected on students’ report cards.
Students in Years 10 to 12 will have the opportunity over the next two weeks to nominate themselves for Half or Full Colours in the areas of service, cultural endeavours, sports, or leadership. Full Colours are typically awarded to Year 12 students who have made outstanding contributions over 5–6 years and already hold a Half Colour. Half Colours recognise consistent and high-level service in a specific field over the course of a year or more. Application booklets will be emailed to students next week and will also be available from the office.

Transition for Year 7 2026
This week, we were thrilled to welcome nearly 100 Year 6 students who have already enrolled for next year! It was a fantastic day filled with opportunities for students to connect with peers from other schools and begin embracing our school values of Respect and Responsibility.
During the visit, we also announced the winner of our Uniform Voucher draw—congratulations to Cooper C from Moore Park Beach State School! Cooper was randomly drawn from all students who enrolled by 8 August. A big thank you to the BNSHS P&C for generously providing the voucher.
We’re excited to welcome even more Year 6 students during our final transition days in December!

EAGLES and Year 7 Scholarship Applications are due
If there are any families who have not year applied for EAGLES Extension program or a Year 7 Scholarship, please do so this coming week as applications close 29 August.

Mapping the Next Five Weeks – Year 10 SET Planning & Preparation
On Monday 12 August, Bundaberg North SHS hosted our annual Subject Selection Information Evening, and what a fantastic night it was! We were thrilled to see such a strong turnout from our Year 10 parents, guardians, and students.
The evening was filled with valuable conversations and opportunities:
- Representatives from MEGT and CQ University were kept busy answering thoughtful questions about apprenticeships and university pathways.
- TAFE support was front and centre, with our Guidance Officer, Stuart Ross and Transition Pathways Officer, Susie Mant, providing tailored guidance to families exploring vocational options.
- The Health Coordinator from Bundy High joined us to promote the Health Hub initiative, showcasing a great example of school collaboration.
- Our faculty stalls were buzzing, with staff passionately advocating for their subject areas and helping families make informed choices.
With over 70 parents and students attending the Year 10 to 11 seminar alone, the evening was a great success and an important step in preparing students for their senior schooling journey.
The Road Ahead – Weeks 6 to 10
Over the next five weeks, our Year 10 students will be focusing on their Senior Education and Training (SET) Plans—a key milestone in shaping their future. The SET Plan is a personalised roadmap for Years 11 and 12, mapping out the subjects, courses, and pathways each student will pursue based on their interests, strengths, and goals.
Week 6 – Explore & Discover
Students will access the MyFuture website (myfuture.edu.au) to explore their strengths, interests, and potential career options. This insight will help students make informed choices about subjects and pathways.
Weeks 6–7 – Planning in OneSchool
Using what they’ve learned from MyFuture (plus discussions with teachers, family, and peers), students will log in to OneSchool → SET Planning → Intended Pathways → Pathway Portfolio. They’ll record possible career ideas and then, in the Course of Study tab, select subjects which align with those interests.
Weeks 8–9 – Support & Refinement
Students can seek guidance from:
- Mr Shield – Head of Senior Schooling
- Mrs Dexter – Year Level Coordinator
- Mrs Prince – Industry Liaison Officer
- Mr Collett – Youth Support Coordinator
In addition, each Year 10 student will be assigned a Study Coach to guide them through the process and ensure they’re ready for interviews.
Week 9 & 10 – SET Plan Interviews
These interviews bring together the student, their family, and a staff member to finalise the plan. By this stage, subject choices should be locked in and aligned with each student’s pathway goals.
How Parents Can Help
- Ask questions – Discuss with your child what they’re discovering on My Future and how it links to possible careers.
- Encourage early completion – The sooner subjects are selected in One School, the better the chances of securing a preferred subject placement.
- Stay engaged – Attend the SET Plan Interview and bring any questions about future pathways.
With your support and the guidance of our staff, we are confident that our Year 10 students will be well-prepared to take the next step in their education journey.
Aaron Ross, Deputy Principal Year 10 and 12

Bringing Maths to Life in Year 11 Mathematical Methods!
In Mr. Ken Spanks’ dynamic Year 11 Mathematical Methods class recently, students weren't just learning about derivatives - they’re experiencing them firsthand! Through a series of engaging, hands-on activities, students deepen their conceptual understanding of this core mathematical concept in fun and memorable ways.
Using innovative tools like overhead transparencies to trace the gradient and plot derivative graphs, and high-tech sonar sensors to track and analyse real-time motion, students explored how Mathematics connects to the real world around them. From modelling velocity to mapping movement around the classroom, every moment was packed with discovery and excitement.
Students walked away not only with a stronger grasp of the mathematics, but with a genuine enthusiasm for seeing the subject come alive. This is learning in action - real maths, real movement, real understanding!
Andrew Duncan, HOD Maths

Science Comes Alive at North!

Science Week was buzzing at North, with students diving into hands-on, mind-blowing activities!
We kicked off with a livestreamed STEM talk, where students got to hear from real scientists and engineers, ask questions, and get inspired about the amazing world of STEM.
Our Year 8 EAGLES didn’t miss out either as they joined a TESEP presentation all about rocks, minerals, and plate tectonics. They explored how the Earth moves and changes, uncovering the secrets of our planet in a fun and interactive way.
Science staff also took part in professional development focused on Earth Science, ensuring that all students at North receive the most up-to-date, high-quality learning experiences.
And there’s more to come! Science is also hosting a Forensic Day, where students will step into the shoes of real detectives—examining clues, analysing evidence, and solving mysteries!
Science at North isn’t just in the lab, it’s alive, exciting, and everywhere around us!
James Peach, Science HOD

Spark your Interest - AG Trip
Recently, students in the Year 11 agriculture class participated in the Spark your Interest program at the Bundaberg Fruit and Vegetable Grower’s Association. This experience offered information sessions and guided tours about our local Macadamia industries and the future career options in the Macadamia farming pathway.
During our visits to these farms and businesses, we were shown what goes on behind the scenes of production and manufacturing of the ‘King of Nuts’, from the harvesting and maintenance of the trees to the production and packaging and the more inside jobs, such as the marketing team and lab workers. This has certainly opened our eyes to the wide variety of jobs and career opportunities that revolve around the Macadamia industry.
The hospitality of these companies was amazing. Students received a catered lunch (which was highlighted as the best part). Industry experts answered the many questions and queries we had. As the possible future workers for these companies, we are thankful that they spared time to show us the beauty of the Australian Macadamia industry.
A special thanks to Emily Grieve and Tim Sayre from Careers & Industry Pathways.Wwithout them, we would never have had this incredible opportunity. In particular we would like to thank Johan Oosthuizen from Alloway Macadamias, Josh Crow at Project Paradise, Craig Brice at Marquis Macadamias, and the amazing team at Stahman and Webster.
An extra special thanks to Mrs Brocklehurst and Mrs Sauer, who helped coordinate this amazing experience.
