From the Principal's Office

It was wonderful to see over 100 people attending and supporting our P&C Cent Sale on May 8th at the Railway Hotel. A big thank you to the wonderful efforts of Jacky Burtt and the tuckshop crew along with our P&C members Shelley, Nathan, Justin, Di, Susie and their helpers who did a great job setting up and running the event. Thank you to those who donated items for the Cent Sale. We raised over $2500 that will now go toward a water cooler and contribute to the raising of funds for cooling in the hall.
This week we are holding an Indigenous Community Consultation workshop to gain feedback to codesign whole-of-school strategies that will aim to ensure wellbeing and cultural identity are nurtured while improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at Bundaberg North SHS. We are developing a program to replace the ‘Girls Academy’ program that will be targeted at both boys and girls.
This week NAPLAN online has begun for year 7 and 9 students. This is the first year that we will be completing NAPLAN using the online model. Students will be using school computers to complete their set of assessments over a number of days. The online process allows a 2 week window to complete all testing. I encourage all students to complete the NAPLAN assessments to the best of their ability.
Tomorrow, Thursday 3.30pm – 6.00pm we are conducting our Student Progress Conferences. This is a good opportunity for all parents and students to meet with the teachers to discuss Term 1 progress. We encourage all parents to make a booking for an appointment with any class teachers through our SOBS booking system which will be open for bookings until 8am tomorrow 13/5. There will be opportunity to discuss assessment and class achievement and I hope that you will be able to attend. If you are unable to make the conference time please call the office to arrange and alternative appointment time or have a phone interview with your teachers.
Redevelopment project begins
We are excited to announce that we have received approval to begin the redevelopment of the outdoor area between B & C block. On Tuesday, 18th May, fencing will be erected around this area and the removal of trees will begin to make way for a new landscaped sitting and eating area. We will be replanting trees, adding new seating and laying turf. This will provide a new outdoor area for our students.
Thanking you,
Robyn Kent

Weekly Behaviour Focus
Our focus on a positive school environment is where all students are included and feel safe and supported so that student learning outcomes are optimised continues this week and next week with our weekly focuses as follows:
Week 4’s Behaviour Focus will be – Safety in all settings.
In class in this week, classroom teachers will be explicitly teaching students how they behave in a safe manner in all settings, including to and from school. I would ask all parents & carers to reinforce this message at home. I have listed the examples of behaving safely that we will explicitly cover with your students below:
- Maintain a safe and non-threatening environment
- Keep dangerous and banned items out of the school
- Follow school sign in and sign out process
- Report accidents or safety concerns to staff immediately
- Resolve conflicts without physical or verbal aggression, using problem-solving strategies
- Keep yourself and others safe online
Week 5’s Behaviour Focus will be – Responsibility in all settings.
In class week 5, classroom teachers will revisit teaching students how they behave in a responsibly manner in all settings, including to and from school. I would ask all parents and carers to reinforce this message at home. I have again listed the examples of responsible behaviour that come from our Student Code of Conduct that we will explicitly cover with your students below:
- Follow staff directions
- Use language and a voice that everyone can be comfortable with
- Use your body in ways that everyone can be comfortable with
- Let other people have space and privacy
- Respect the school environment by keeping it clean and tidy
- Put away devices when they aren’t needed
- Value yourself through all your interactions, being mindful of the image you create for the school
Success will always be with you, as long as you place safety the first priority.
Think Safe! Act Safe!

Intention to enrol process
Finding the right environment to maximise your child’s individual talents while offering a wide range of opportunities can be challenging. At Bundaberg North State High School open communication and positive relationships are very important to us. Bundaberg North State High School offers an education to help develop the whole child – that’s what makes us different.
The transition period where we start to welcome new students and families from our feeder schools and beyond is always an exciting time. We love the opportunity to start connecting with you as soon as possible so we can start our journey in getting to know your student and making sure their start to high school is as smooth as can be.
To secure your child’s enrolment at Bundaberg North State High School please follow this 3 step process:
Step 1
Fill in the online intention to enrol form below or click here. If you do not have access to fill the form in online you can request a paper based copy from Bundaberg North State High School.
Step 2
An enrolment pack will then be forwarded to you by your nominated method outlined in your intention to enrol form.
Step 3
Return your completed enrolment and consent forms to the school at our ‘Enrolment Afternoon’ 20th July, 2021.
Open communication and positive relationships are very important to us. This is why we encourage all families to attend our enrolment afternoon so that we can meet all of our new families before you enrol.
The purpose of this afternoon is to also enable you to gain a broader understanding of our school, and provide a chance to ask questions about what matters most to you while witnessing first hand the commitment and friendliness of our school community.
We look forward to welcoming you into the Bundaberg North State High School community.

CQU Business Challenge Competition
Year 12 students Mitchell Ethell, Kasey Houston, Breanna Clark and Lachlan Rechenberg represented Bundaberg North SHS on Tuesday evening at the CQU Business Trivia Challenge. Participating teams were challenged to answer 10 multiple choice questions in each of the four topic areas: Accounting, Business & Management, Economics and Law and General Knowledge. Whilst we did not take out the winning trophy on the night, our students are to be commended on how well they worked as a team and for how well they represented the school. Well done students.
Mrs Jensen, Head of Department

Work Experience - Year 10
As part of their career education program, Year 10 students are required to participate in a 5-day work experience program. This year the work experience will be held from Monday 13th September to Friday 17th September 2021.
Students are required to find their own work experience placement and introduce themselves as they would if looking for a position with the employer. The purpose of work experience is to allow the students to acquire knowledge of the real world of work and to assist them with subject selection for their final two years at school.
The work experience program has been extremely helpful for students in the past. It gives students the opportunity to try areas of employment to give firsthand knowledge of the duties that they would experience within the employment of choice once they have completed school.
All schools regatta
Last weekend North High participated in the first Bundaberg All Schools Regatta. The weather was perfect with no winds and the sun holding off until the afternoon. Our small team of five oarsome rowers competed with 170 rowers from 6 other Bundaberg schools and Maryborough State High Rowing team.
Year 8 Sarah and Year 9 Piper rowed together achieving a very close 2nd in the Year 9 Girls Double. Year 11’s Kailtyn and Jayne taking out 1st in the Girls Year 12 Double race, and Richard placing a well-earned 4th in one of the two heats for the Boys Year 11 Single.
Training continues through to the end of the term with our team training with the Bundaberg Rowing Club for the Bundaberg All Schools Head of the River Regatta on the 23 of May, followed by the Central Queensland Schools Regatta in late June.

Yr 12 Recreation students get their first-aid qualifications

This term, through their First Aid Unit, the Year 12 Recreation students have an opportunity to gain their First Aid Certificate. It is great to see some students taking up the opportunity and committing to finishing the course. The students complete the course via an online platform and then the practical first aid assessment is completed by a First Aid Instructor. Students have been encouraged to put their certificate in their resume and all students have been emailed a digital copy for future reference.

COOPER CUP
Open Girls Rugby 7’s
The girls have been training twice a week for the last three weeks. They have been practicing their tackling technique and learning the finer things about rugby (compared to league) such as ‘narrowing the gate’, ‘rolling away’ after the tackle and always being in support in both attack and defence.
Unfortunately the Cooper Cup day was postponed for all girls rugby 7’s as there were insufficient teams to create a draw. However, all is not lost! The girls (all teams) will be playing three games in June on a Wednesday afternoon (after school). The dates are 2nd June, 9th June and 16th June. The girls will be playing against local schools.
Further details to follow.
Yr 7/8 Girls Futsal
The girls have been training twice a week for the last three weeks. In only their second training session they played against the Year 9 boys and were very competitive. The team has been practicing their skills of controlling the ball, quick touches and ‘finding space’. They have a practice game against the boys teams both sessions this week.
