From the Principal's office

As the term draws to a close, students are completing assessment. Students have an assessment schedule that outlines the assessment commitments. Please check with your student to ensure they are aware of their assessment due dates and that they are working on preparing for their assessment tasks. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact classroom teachers via email or phone to clarify any concerns. You can access your student's assessment schedule on QParents. Semester 1 reports will be issued in Week 10.
Week 10 will provide many sporting opportunities for our students. Students who have signed up for Cooper Cup in Netball, Futsul and Rugby 7s will travel to Hervey Bay over 3 days to compete in the first Cooper Cup challenge: Year 7&8 on Monday, 21st June, Year 9&10 on Tuesday, 22nd June and Year 11&12 on Wednesday, 23rd June. On Thursday, 24 June Athletics events will be held at North High oval and on Friday we all travel to the Bundaberg athletics grounds for our annual athletics carnival. Please ensure that you have registered and given parent consent for your child to attend via the link, or in the sports section of this newsletter.
On 26 May we had students from Year 7-12 attend the Maths Team Challenge at the Bundaberg Multiplex. Our students participated very well and our intermediate team came away with a 3rd place. Well done to all who represented Bundaberg North SHS.
From 1st December, 2021 Shawline Embroidery will become the new sole supplier of the uniform for North High. Currently uniforms are only available at Lowes and as we transition to the new supplier we are aware that some items may no longer be in stock at Lowes and we are negotiating with Shawline to make stock available. We are looking forward to introducing a jacket and trackpants in 2022.
We continue to work with our students to ensure high standards of behaviour throughout the school. Clear behaviour expectations are being explicitly taught by teachers on a daily basis to all students. Our values Respect, Responsibility and Safety are the key to our ways of working. Students know the expectations and in order to provide a safe, supportive environment for all, students are expected to follow the Student Code of Conduct. North is a great school and we can all make a positive contribution if we are respectful, responsible and safe.

Senior news - Yr 10 Pathways, Subject Selection Survey, Subject Selection Evening
YEAR 10 PATHWAYS NEWS
Year 10 students are about to embark on an exciting senior subject selection and pathways journey. In the next few weeks, students will be exploring the range of possible courses available to them here at North High in 2022. Students will learn about subjects through a set of subject introduction videos which can be accessed through the Student SharePoint subject selection page.
On this page, on the school website and at the link below you will also find the 2022 subject selection booklet. This booklet has information on each of the senior subjects, and advice on how to make appropriate choices for the student’s preferred pathway.
Other information on senior schooling can be found on the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) website’s MyQCE page.
YEAR 10 SUBJECT SELECTION SURVEY
This term year 10 students have been preparing their Senior Education and Training Plan (SETP). As a part of this, students are to attend the Subject Selection Evening on, Monday 19th July (Week 2, Term 3). Prior to this evening students take part in a Subject Selection Survey to gauge the subjects that they would need and like to take to fulfil their employment, training and tertiary pathways beyond high school.
This week students will receive the survey form that must be completed at school, next week, during their RAS lesson on Tuesday 15th June. A copy of this form has also be emailed to parents. Please help your student to make preliminary subject selections on the subject selection survey form.
2022 subject lines are created in Year 11/12 based on the preferences that students submit via the Subject Selection Survey and school resourcing. It is very important that every student thinks carefully about their selections.
When choosing subjects in Year 11/12, students should consider subjects which meet the following criteria:
- Subjects which may be prerequisites for further study;
- Subjects which will help a student reach a chosen career or keep a wide range of options open;
- Subjects which will develop skills, knowledge and attitudes useful throughout the student’s life;
- Subjects which a student enjoys;
- Subjects in which a student has already experienced some success;
- Subjects which provide an appropriate challenge to the student.
Students need to decide about a combination of subjects that suits them. It is important to remember that all students are individuals, and that their needs and requirements in subject selection will be quite different from those of other students. Students should choose their subjects wisely and ensure they know which pathway they are wanting to pursue; employment, training or tertiary (page 12, Senior Subject Selection Booklet 2022). This means that it is unwise to either take or avoid a subject because:
- Someone told them that they will like or dislike it;
- Their friends are or are not taking it;
- They like or dislike the teacher.
Students need to be honest about their abilities and realistic with their career goals. There is little to be gained by continuing with or taking subjects that have proven difficult, even after students have put in their best efforts. Similarly, if career goals require the study of certain subjects, students must consider if they have the ability and determination to work hard enough to achieve the necessary level of results in those subjects. It is the expectation that all Year 12s gain a QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) and therefore students need to select subjects that they can succeed in to be able to gain a QCE (for further guidance on the QCE and ATAR attainment please refer to the Senior Subject Selection Booklet 2022 on our website).
Along with the Senior Subject Selection Booklet on our website, students also have access to videos by each faculty detailing the subjects that are offered. Subject videos can be found on the Bundaberg North State High School Student SharePoint site.
It is important to note that this Subject Selection Survey is NOT the finalised 2022 subject lines and is only one method of gaining student preferences for subjects for consideration. The final subject lines for Year 11 2022 will be presented to students and parents at the Subject Selection Evening.
SUBJECT SELECTION EVENING
On Monday 19th July (week 2, term 3), Bundaberg North SHS will host a subject selection evening for year 10 students entering year 11 in 2022. This event gives students and parents the best information and advice on pathways and senior subjects, as well as the chance to ask questions and talk to the experts in each area. Navigating the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) systems can be complicated; at the subject selection evening, these will be explained.
The event also features other training organisations (such as TAFE), as well as apprenticeship and traineeship services. This means that even students considering a pathway out of schooling after year 10 should consider this a must-see event.
Senior Education and Training Plan (SETP) interviews
Starting Friday 23rd July and continuing to 30th July, all students will attend an interview with a parent and one of our trained staff to confirm their pathway and subject selections for 2022. These interviews are the most important step in ensuring that your student is on the pathway that is best for them, and one which leads to an outstanding future. Bookings can be made using the SOBS online booking system which opens on Monday, 14th June. You will find the link to the SOBS site below. If you have any difficulty using the online booking system, please call our office for assistance on 4130 0222.
Harvest Ed

On Monday, 31 May we hosted a combined schools workshop for students from Bundaberg North SHS, Gin Gin SHS and Isis SHS who have been participating in an extension activity called Harvest Ed – students are looking at the Agricultural industry and its links in the global market. A visiting lecturer from University of Melbourne's Asia Education Foundation facilitated the workshop. Our three students Riley, Kyla and Lara were fantastic ambassadors for our school on the day.

Rite of passage opportunity

Babbinyuwi Wanda is welcoming referrals for Men and Boys to attend a four day Rite of Passage on Butchulla Country (Ravenshill) during the upcoming school holidays – Wednesday July 7 to Saturday July 10.
A rite of passage involves the facilitation of a transformation process. There are many transformations in life such as the birth of a child, marriage, retirement and death. Babbinyuwi Wanda is about a boy and his father (or significant male role model) separating from the broader community and entering a community of boys and men in remote country. The boys and men experience ritual and lore, they share story, face challenge, recognise spirit and create vision before returning to the broader community in celebration and acknowledgement of their transformation.
Babbinyuwi Wanda is a community of men spear-headed by Butchulla Men’s Business Aboriginal Association Inc. (BMBAA) and administrated by WYLD projects (Where Youth Live Dreams).
For further information please contact me on 4130 0222 or email jalbe61@eq.edu.au

Last week in RAS class all year 10 students were given consent forms for you to complete and return to the school. Ozcare will be collecting the signed forms on Friday 18th June. This deadline cannot be extended so please ensure your consent forms are returned to the office by this date.
Planeteers
Last week saw the final task for the Future Leaders Eco Challenge (FLEC). The task was to create and film a skit for the theme “Protect the Reef”. Our Planeteers decided to focus on litter as a threat to the reef. We hope you enjoy our skit. #rgsflec

Year 12 Tourism excursion to Dreamworld
What an awesome day was had by all. After an extremely early start the two year 12 Tourism classes arrived at Dreamworld ready to spend the day experiencing all the park had to offer in an effort to gather information for their assignment. The first task was to listen to a presentation from Dreamworld staff about how the park fits into the tourism aspects of the Gold Coast. Once this presentation was complete the students were allowed to experience all the park had to offer. Most students took the opportunity to ride every ride (at least once) and to attend the Tiger show.
We were blessed with a beautiful day and very few other patrons at the park. This made it possible to have little or no wait time on every ride. Mrs Richardt, who was on her first visit to Dreamworld, experienced holding an olive python and ride some of the rides with students. At the end of the day a tired but happy group of year 12s and staff boarded the bus for the long ride home. After navigating peak hour traffic, exacerbated by a collision on the M1, we arrived home at 10.30pm. The students behaviour was exemplary, for which they should be congratulated, and it was an absolute pleasure to escort them for the day. Now the assignment writing begins. I look forward to the next Tourism excursion.

Ulton Experience
A big thank you to Ammie Cauchi, Jess Wilkinson and Connor Silcox from Ulton Accountants for coming to the school today to talk to our Year 10 students thinking of selecting AWESOME subjects next year such as Business, Accounting and Legal Studies. The session was very informative and interactive. It was particularly wonderful to have past student Connor Silcox, now a fully qualified Chartered Accountant with Ulton address the students. We are very proud of Connor.

INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Each year North students compete in our annual athletics carnival which is held over two days. The carnival is always a great success with many happy faces at the end of each day. Four teams, lots of points to be won and a wide range of competition between houses, fellow students and even teachers! Our very own school captain, Braydan, just edging out Mr Spanks in the 100m Social race. The theme ‘Dynamic Duos/Families’ had everyone thinking outside the box and was a big success. We had Spongebob and Patrick, Mario and Luigi. The competition was fierce with everyone putting in 100% effort, but at the end of the day there could only be one winner. The house that took out the trophy for the 2021 Athletics Carnival was … TIRROAN with a whopping 1748 points.
Congratulations to all age champion winners and a special congratulations to the following students that broke records:
- Tamara – 12year girls 100m, 200m, and Long Jump
- Bethany – 15year girls 400m. Smashing the previous record that was set back in 1979!
- Shannon – Open girls Shot Put, Discus and smashing the previous javelin record which was set back in 1989!
The house captains would like to thank all the students, teachers and volunteers that put in the hard work behind the scenes to make the carnival a success.
