From the Principal's Office

Semester 1 reports will be issued at the end of this week. Parents/guardians will receive the report card by email and can also access it using QParents. Students can access their report via Oneschool. Please take time to go through subject results. Students will receive an A-E rating for achievement, effort and behaviour.
This week we are having a heavy focus on sport at North High. Today is the final of 3 days of a new state schooling competition called Cooper Cup. Students from Year 7-12 travelled to Hervey Bay on Monday, Tuesday and today to compete in Netball, Futsul and Rugby 7s.
On Friday we have our annual Athletics carnival. Some athletic events will be held at school on Thursday and on Friday we bus all students to the Bundaberg athletics grounds for a full day carnival. There will be no classes at school on Friday and no Friday 5 as students will be transported back to school from the athletics grounds by 3.00pm. Please ensure that you have registered your permission online for your child to attend the carnival. All students need parental permission to attend. Please complete the online consent for your child to participate (yes or no) by Thursday 24th. No students will be remaining at school as we are all going to the Athletics grounds. It should be a great day to end the term.
On Friday last week we welcomed Indigenous Elders and members of our Indigenous community to a presentation outlining responses to the recent community consultation workshop held May 12. We are co-designing a model for supporting Indigenous students and embedding localised Indigenous perspectives that will be operational by Term 4, 2021.
Also on Friday last week you will have heard about the STYMIE presentation given to all students – providing an anonymous reporting platform for issues and behaviours that are concerning. STYMIE is a tool for our community to help us maintain a safe and non-threatening environment and support the wellbeing of our students. Please click the link below to read more about Stymie.
Finally, I would like to thank you for your support throughout the term. I hope that your children enjoy their holiday break.

As we move forward into semester 2 there are a number of class changes that will occur for students:
- All students in years 7 – 10 change elective classes and teachers;
- A number of students in years 11 & 12 who take Essential Mathematics or Essential English will have a class change due to combining some smaller classes;
- Some students may have a teacher change due to some teachers taking leave in semester 2; and
- With the rollover of the new timetable we have also taken the opportunity to move some students to support them in engaging more effectively in class.
New timetables will be released via OneSchool and emailed to students by the start of the second week of the holidays. It is important for ALL students to check their timetables ahead of the first day of semester two, Monday, 12th July, 2021.

Senior Education and Training Plan (SETP) interviews
Starting Friday 23rd July and continuing to 30th July, all students will attend an interview with a parent and one of our trained staff to confirm their pathway and subject selections for 2022. These interviews are the most important step in ensuring that your student is on the pathway that is best for them, and one which leads to an outstanding future. The SET plan maps out a student’s pathway to a range of outcomes, including university, apprenticeships, traineeships and employment. Now is the time to book and secure an appointment for you and your student.
Bookings can be made using the SOBS online booking system which opened on Monday, 14th June. You will find the link to the SOBS site below. If you have any difficulty using the online booking system, please call our office for assistance on 4130 0222.

Subject selection evening
All year 10 students should also plan to attend the subject selection evening on Monday 19th July (week 2, term 3).This event gives students and parents the best information and advice on pathways and senior subjects, as well as the chance to ask questions and talk to the experts in each area. Navigating the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) systems can be complicated; at the subject selection evening, these will be explained.
The event also features other training organisations (such as TAFE), as well as apprenticeship and traineeship services. This means that even students considering a pathway out of schooling after year 10 should consider this a must-see event.
I look forward to seeing you and your student at both of these important events.
Mr Wright, Deputy Principal Senior School
Year 9 Business Venture
The Year 9 Business class conducted a business venture in the last 2 weeks of this term. The students sold a range of products produced by TAYM The Label. The products sold included anklets, necklaces, earrings, body products, key chains, COVID masks and scrunchies. Year 11 student Vanessa is the name/face behind business TAYM The Label. Vanessa started the e-commerce business two years ago and the business has been growing ever since. Vanessa visited the Year 9 Business class to share her entrepreneurial success story and she has been a real inspiration to the students. We would like to thank everyone who supported the Year 9 Business Venture and TAYM The Label. We hope to hold another Business Venture at school just before Christmas.

Sweet sounds
On Friday 11 June, the Bundaberg North SHS String Ensemble performed for the students at North State School. Our ensemble students had a great time and performed very well. There were little students in the audience who were so excited to watch and listen to the performance. The majority of our high school ensemble start their strings journey at North State School, so it is important to inspire the primary school students to continue their studies. Our ensemble will be having a combined rehearsal with North State School in Term 3, and the two string groups will perform together for the primary school in Term 4.
Annette Christensen, Strings Instrumental Music Teacher

Pop-up hospitality
A number of Year 10, 11 and 12 Hospitality students worked at the Pop up Polo event on Saturday. Students served food and beverages to hundreds of guests and gained valuable experience to be used towards their Certificate II in Hospitality.
Mrs Harney, Home Economics teacher

Shave for a Cure, Colour for a Cause 2021
Another awesome event. NORTH HIGH ROCKS!! So far on our website we have raised $1500, and with some of the ‘pledges’ listed below (that have yet to be recorded on our site) we will have raised approximately $3100.
Shavers – Zion ($1000), Alex ($584), Luke ($407), Chloe ($230), Mr H ($514), Cooper , Alex P, Eric
Colour – Emily ($146.50). Over 40 students on the day donated to the cause and had their hair coloured by the year 11 Student Council Representatives and some other year 11 helpers.
Donations from students – $220. This was a fantastic effort and every cent raised for this great cause is appreciated.

Developments at North
Exciting construction work has begun in the administration carpark. The upgrade includes a disabled carpark, a turning circle for vehicles and some covered walkways to enhance the facilities and make a safer walkway to the bus area for stduents. Landscape development is continuing between B and C Blocks and we will soon see the addition of a number of trees with seating around. Over the holidays there will be further work occurring with the removal of asbestos and creation of new meeting rooms for support staff.
Miss Kent, Principal

Walk away...

Bundaberg North State High school expects students to maintain a safe and non-threatening environment and to resolve conflict without physical or verbal aggression, using problem solving strategies.
The school has liaised with Bundaberg Queensland Police Service to deliver an information session about the significant impact violence can have on young people and the wider community.
Paul Stanley, father of “one punch” victim, Matthew Stanley, will be visiting Bundaberg North State High School on Thursday 15 July, to deliver a presentation as part of the “Walk Away Chill Out - Stop Youth Violence” program. All students will be attending a 45-minute presentation. The presentations will focus on encouraging students to make safe choices regarding their own behaviour and that of their peers.
School Opinion Survey

The annual School Opinion Survey will be conducted in term 3 and will close on 30th July 2021. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (Yr 8 and Yr 11) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregive Survey will be emailed to one parnet/caregiver per family in the week beginning 5th July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for Parents and Caregivers, 2021. Check your junk email folders if you can't find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Yr 12 post options info - QUT

Our Year 12 students recently participated in an Explore Your Future career education session, with a group of guest speakers from QUT. Students learnt about the variety of post school options available to them after Year 12. Student Ambassadors shared personal stories about how they applied to QTAC, as well as their top tips for our students. The Explore Your Future team showed students how to analyse the different career pathways available to them and presented information about future job growth predictions. All our students are eligible to receive a free, pre-paid QTAC voucher (valued at $45) to apply for university or TAFE by emailing exploreuni@qut.edu.au.
They also shared details about the National School Leavers Information Service which provides online resources and free career guidance to all students in our local community.
The Service is available by:

Year 7 enrolment in 2022
It has been encouraging to see so many new enrolments for Year 7 students in 2022 from our local primary schools. We have distributed enrolment packs to schools, in prepation for ENROLMENT AFTERNOON on Tuesday, 20th July in our school hall. Parents are invited to come along, return their completed forms and finalise their child's enrolment for 2022. Parents can also gather information, talk to North High Junior Team members and stay for the parent address. We would love to see you there.
From the Sports desk
Over the last three days, Bundaberg North State High School sent teams to Hervey Bay to compete in the inaugural Cooper Cup. Students participated in Rugby 7’s, Netball and Futsal. North fielded teams in nearly all divisions and sent students that had never played school sport before. Increased involvement in sport is one of the priorities of Cooper Cup. By all reports students have had a great time and are super keen for next terms instalment of Cooper Cup. Our year 7 and yr 8 netball teams played well and came a very respectable 4th out of 11 teams. Congratulations girls.
A full report with all results will be available next term.
Mr Thatcher, Sports Coordinator
