From the Principal's Office

Welcome to our mid-term 3 newsletter. The term is progressing well with many of our students involved in a range of activities. It is great to see so many students participating in sporting, cultural, service and academic activities.
Students and staff are currently preparing for and working on assessment tasks. Our Year 12s in particular, are completing their final assessments before their external exams in October. We appreciate your support of these students and ask that you arrange any early exits from school before school starts so that we do not have to call classrooms and interrupt learning.
Some students have recently participated in Maths competitions – both team and individual.
Last weekend we had an enthusiastic group of students participate in Relay for Life representing North High. They conducted a highly successful fundraising Trivia Night the week before raising over $2000 to donate to the Cancer Council. Congratulations to the team and thank you to Mr Williams for organising the team and to the staff who assisted.
Last week our Planeteers met with Bundaberg Regional Council and participated in a tree planting project. Students planted trees at the front of the school that were kindly donated by the Bundaberg Regional Council. Well done to our team of Planeteers.
This week we have 3 teams of students participating in Wide Bay Rugby 7s competitions. We wish them all the best.
Four Year 8 students have been involved in a 6 month STEM project called Harvest Ed focussing on global agricultural matters. They will be travelling to Isis District SHS next week to participate in culminating activity. Good luck to the team.
The P&C are holding a Music Bingo night at the Young Aussie Hotel on Saturday 28th August. We hope to see many attend to raise money for our students. It should be a very enjoyable night.
Our instrumental music students are performing at the Moore Park Festival. We wish them well.
We are holding an Arts Night this year on Wednesday September 8th. Last year, due to COVID restrictions we were unable to conduct an Arts night so we are very keen to see this return this year. Stay tuned for more information about this.
Our Year 12s are currently rehearsing for their end of year performance. This is a voluntary activity but it is wonderful to see so many of the Year 12s participating and coming together as a team for the performance. I am sure it will be very entertaining at Graduation.
At Bundaberg North SHS we strive to offer a range of opportunities for students to gain skills in a wide variety of activities. There are opportunities available and we should encourage students to get involved. All activities count towards building a well-rounded schooling experience for students. As our Annual Presentation night is coming up in October, student participation in activities counts toward the achievement of awards. Students are currently nominating for awards for this year’s ceremony on October 12th.

Award ceremonies - Tuesday, 12th October

At Bundaberg North State High School we take pride in acknowledging the achievements of the students each year who are committed to excellence in their academic, sporting, service or cultural pursuits at our Presentation Parade and Presentation Night awards ceremonies. Award nominations are open until Friday 20th August for students to nominate for service, culture, sporting and academic awards. Nomination forms are available from the main administration office in A block. If students have any questions they can speak with Mrs Arnold, Deputy Principal.
We can't wait to celebrate these amazing students. Please mark it on your calendars with a gold star. Presentation Parade and Presentation Night ceremonies are on the 12th Ocotber. COVID19 guidelines will dictate how we run both of these events, similar to last year and we will communicate whether parents are able to attend both ceremonies over the coming weeks.
Mrs Arnold, Deputy Principal
Next Step survey
2021 Early School Leavers survey
The Queensland Government is seeking the support of the school community for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2020, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.
Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.
Thank you for your support of Next Step post-school destination surveys in 2021.
For more information, visit www.qld.gov.au/nextstep/ or telephone toll free on 1800 068 587.
IDAHOBIT/Rainbow Day

IDAHOBIT/ Rainbow Day
Hi everyone, I’m Charli and I am a grade 11 student organizing and running IDAHOBIT/ Rainbow day on the 8th of September. Last year, I received an amazing scholarship to the University of Queensland and became a member of the Young Achiever’s Program {YAP}. As part of the YAP society, I am required to complete some sort of creative challenge, so I chose to host a day of celebration of our LGBTQIA+ community.
IDAHOBIT, a confusing acronym for most I’m sure, translates to “International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia”. This day is about being proud and being able to celebrate and raise awareness for our LGBT people, students and allies. Headspace, QClinic and I will be running stalls of activities, purchasable items and more. Of course, this is open to everyone and anyone.
Rainbow day will also be a free dress day so come in your brightest rainbow clothes, with no gold coin donation necessary.
Thanks
Charli, Yr 11 student

Mathematics competitions and visits
Students in mathematics have been busy with a series of competitions for some of our LEAP students and CQU visits for year 9 students.
All LEAP students participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition in classes on the 4th and 5th of August and we look forward to seeing their results later in the term. Additionally, six students participated in the Year 7/8 quiz held at Bundaberg State High School on 3rd August. The two teams did very well in the competition. The winning team had 23 points and our team had the following point totals:
- 20 points and 3rd place: Louise-Rei,Isobel and Chase
- 19 points: Mylees, Charlie and Dermott
Year 9 students were again fortunate to have Dr Ben Taylor, Head of Undergraduate Engineering from CQUniversity visit the school on 4th and 5th of August to assist students with collecting data for their mathematics assignments. Dr Taylor gave students an introduction to professional engineering, and used a crane apparatus to test the maximum mass that could be suspended from the end of the crane. We are grateful for the long-term commitment and relationship that Dr Taylor has invested in our school and our students.
Mr Duncan, Head of Department

Relay for Life
Trivia Night Fundraiser
Our Relay for Life team held a Trivia Night on Friday at the Spotted Dog Tavern in Bundaberg North to raise money for the Cancer Council. There was great support from the school community and we would like to sincerely thank those who attended. Several North High students showed their talents on the microphone and did a marvelous job managing the prize draws. The event raised over $2000 for this great cause.

Relay for Life - walking to save lives
What a huge weekend! Congratulations to our Relay for Life team who raised over $2000 for the Cancer Council and who participated in the 9 hour relay on Saturday. Our fabulous team of ten Year 11 and 12 students did us proud as they walked laps to honour those we have lost to cancer. The students were excellent ambassadors for Bundaberg North State High School.

Senior Indigenous Rewards Trip
On Wednesday 4th August the North High Indigenous Seniors attended an excursion to the Hervey Bay Eco Marine Tour. These students were rewarded for their good effort and attendance throughout Term 2.
The students travelled by boat where they were given a tour of Round Island and experienced a number of cultural activities such as storytelling, dance, didgeridoo and even tried bush tucker.
A great day was had by all who attended and they are looking forward to next term's reward trip.
Carley Long, Indigenous Education

Ready made and delicious...
Our Year 9 Food Technology classes have been busy learning about ready made meals and how to present/package them for sale in vending machines.
Over the last few weeks we have been testing suitable recipes and below are some example of the jar salads they made. We hope families are enjoying the dinner provisions that are coming home and look forward to next term where students will be designing their own ready-made meal.
Mrs Austin, Food Technology teacher

A kind donation to make a difference
Our sincere thanks go to Michael and Hayley Long for kindly donating new laptops to two North High students. Today, Corey (year 10) and Jeremiah (year 8) were presented with their devices, to support them in the studies. Thank you so much to Michael and Hayley.
Robyn Kent, Principal

Green Book project
The Green Book project is about connecting communities, taking environmental action, learning, and making change for a brighter future. It seeks to encourage youth to connect with their local, natural environment and to build and strengthen local communities.
The program is funded through the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and ABC Heywire Youth Innovation grants.
As part of this project, the Bundaberg Regional Council has donated 20 native trees to our school to plant in our grounds. Today the North High Planeteers and a few extra interested students planted six of these trees at the front corner of the school grounds. We look forward to watching them grow, providing shade and habitat to wildlife. The rest of the trees will be planted in the coming week.
Thank you to the students who participated, Bundaberg Regional Council, and our groundsman, Howard, who prepared the area for us.
Mrs Roberts, Planeteers Coordinator

2021 BDSSS ATHLETICS RESULTS
The 2021 BDSSS Athletics Carnival was well represented by North students. Many of the team competed in multiple events and showed true ‘North Spirit’, giving it their best effort, never giving up and great sportsmanship. As a team North finished 5th out of the 10 schools in the district. We had some fantastic individual results, with most students competing in nearly every event.
Students who placed 1st or 2nd have gained selection into the Bundaberg team and will now be competing at the Wide Bay trials, 26th 27th August.
Congratulations students!
