BNSHS Newsletter 1st September 2021
From the Principal's Office

This term our school is undergoing several upgrades to our facilities. Progress is being made with the redevelopment of our landscaped seating area between B and C Block. While there have been delays with access to materials, we are hoping that the new seating area will be open by the start of Term 4. The Administration carpark is also nearing completion along with a new shed for the groundsman and HPE department and the renovation of rooms for our Guidance officers and support staff. We look forward to the completion of these projects.
Students are currently preparing for several activities – Cooper Cup, September 13th-15th – for Volleyball, Basketball and Touch, Arts Night on September 8, Student Progress Conferences on September 14th and Year 10 work experience in Week 10 to name a few. We encourage as many students as possible to be involved in the range of activities on offer.
Our Year 12 students who are studying General subjects are now preparing for the external exams that will be held from week 4, Term 4. All year 12 students will be participating in a 17 day exam block before their graduation and Prom. We wish them well as they prepare for their final assessments.
Reminder that there is a Student Free Day on Friday September 3rd. Staff will be participating in professional development on that day and students are not required to attend. This is a state-wide Student Free Day.
Our Year 7 teachers have been delivering a Reading program for all Year 7 students that focuses on the use of Sheena Cameron strategies. Students have completed two reading comprehension assessments that align with the Australian Curriculum and it is very pleasing to see that students have improved their results from Term 2 to Term 3. Well done Year 7s.
Robyn Kent, Principal

Rugby 7s
On Friday 20th August three teams from North High competed in the inaugural ‘Wide Bay’ Rugby 7’s carnival at the 'Across The Waves' football fields.
Teams from Bundaberg, Gladstone, Hervey Bay and Maryborough came for the event. The girls and boys U/13 and Open Boys teams each played 3 games in their ‘round robin’ competition. The improvement in each team as they progressed through the pool matches was terrific to see. Each team in their fourth and final game showed their improvement by all winning the match.
Congratulations to all the students who committed to the pre-tournament training and the games on the day. All North students showed magnificent sportsmanship and the U/13’s are already talking about playing again next year.

Harvest Ed

Harvest Ed
Every Friday, for the last two terms, 4 Year 8 students - Riley, Hermione, Lara and myself have been participating in Harvest Ed via virtual online classes at the library.
We learnt about various STEM (Science, Technology, English and Maths) activities based around agriculture and farming.
Our main presentation was a problem in the farming industry. We chose food wastage. We had to research our idea and create a PowerPoint presentation with a suggested solution.
Last Thursday, on the 26 August, the Harvest Ed students from Bundaberg North, Gin Gin and Isis met at Isis High School where we presented our ideas in an online classroom to our fellow students around Australia. This was the conclusion of the Harvest Ed subject for 2021.
We have really enjoyed the experience and found it very educational and informative.
On behalf of my fellow Bundaberg North Harvest Ed team, I'd like to thank Ms Hall for hosting and organising us each Friday and Miss Kent for accompanying us on our excursion to Isis High School.

Moore Park Beach Arts Festival
On Friday the 20th of August, the Moore Park Arts Festival was officially opened, and the North High concert band was fortunate enough to attend. Along with the Kolan South State School Drum Corps, Kids and Co Choir, and Moore Park beach state school choir, our school concert band was proud to represent our school at this event. The band played many songs to entertain the crowd. I was even told that the Kids and Co Choir were dancing along to our songs. Being able to perform for an audience was very beneficial and was great fun. It was a great experience to be a part of the Moore Park Arts Festival Junior Opening, and it was especially amazing to see so many young people with a passion for music and performing.

Help from Headspace
During year level parade this week, our Year 12’s participated in a fun activity with Cristel and Holly from Headspace with Cameron Rose as the wonderful volunteer.
Students discussed stressors that they are experiencing and Cameron pretended to be the stress bucket holding all of those stresses. This exercise helped illustrate that learning to manage stress is important before your bucket overflows and that it is important to have strategies to help lighten the load. Headspace discussed their 7 tips for a healthy headspace.

A big thank you to Cristel and Holly from Headspace, Bundaberg.
