BNSHS Newsletter June 10th 2020
From the Principal's office

Yr 11 Earth & Environmental Science.
Over the past 2 weeks, positive progress has been made with students returning to face to face learning and while we are still observing the required COVID restrictions as they apply to schools students are enjoying being back and interacting again with their peers and teachers. We are still waiting for news on the lifting of restrictions on sport, excursions, assemblies and events and will notify everyone when we receive information.
Uniform changes
We are making progress on the selection of our next uniform contract. Our current contract will end in 2021 and we need to start the process for the next contract. We are forming a committee of students, staff and P&C representatives to look at new options for introducing a jacket and long pants to our uniform list and also a new jumper design. A planning and consultation process will be conducted over the next 6 weeks before designs are finalised and the uniform contract is put out to tender. We will be welcoming feedback on the uniform designs.
Reporting
Students are currently working on modified programs and completing assessment before we issue Semester 1 reports in Week 3 of Term 3. We have extended the reporting date to allow students opportunity to complete their tasks now that they have returned to the classroom. I encourage you to make an appointment with your child’s teachers to discuss their progress as the reports will be also modified and provide only a level of achievement for each subject. Having conversations with teachers will enhance your understanding of your child’s progress and give you opportunity to ask questions. We are unsure whether face to face interviews will be allowed by Term 3 but if not, then interviews will be able to be conducted over the phone. We will be keeping you informed of the process when we confirm conditions allowed but I do encourage all parents to make contact with teachers for progress conferences.
Thank you again to our parents/carers for the job you did during the supervision of home-based learning. Many students did a commendable job in completing the work set under the restricted conditions and I thank everyone who put in their best effort to stay engaged and participating in the expected work programs.

Important information about student reporting
As you will be aware, the disruption to school routines as a result of the Queensland government’s response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, has resulted in changes to the teaching, learning, assessment, and reporting at Bundaberg North State High School.
The Department of Education has modified the requirements for reporting student academic achievement for Semester 1, 2020. Schools will provide a report using the information that they have available from Term 1 and Term 2, 2020. This information will be modified from the planned assessment program as many students did not attend school for the last week of Term 1, and they participated in a home based learning program for three to five weeks in Term 2.
The Semester 1 student reports from Bundaberg North State High School will be available from 31 July 2020. At North High students will be provided with a level of achievement for all subjects with the exception of RAS, reading and QCIA – lifeskills. This level of achievement has been determined using the available information about student learning and achievement from Term 1 and Term 2.
Please do not hesitate to contact me or your student’s teachers if you require further information.

Year 9 Design and Technology

Declan, Tyler, Ben and Logan - all proud owners
The Year 9 students in the photo have completed a project in Design and Technology called Kal’s stool. The project is manufactured from solid pine timber, (not manufactured board) which is an environmentally sound and certified material that will have a long life span before it is recycled, re-purposed or discarded.
Good skills Jacob

Jacob's fine craftsmanship
Jacob shows off his craftsmanship in the production of Yr 11 Furnishing Skills project. A multitude of timber joints such as lap dovetails, biscuited mitre, dowel and stop shouldered mortice and tenon were incorporated into this games table project made from Hoop pine and New Guinea Rosewood.
K'Larni dreams of Diamonds

When K’Larni first started playing netball just 2 years ago, she wouldn’t have imagined that she could have achieved so much in such a short time.
In her first year she was selected in the North Queensland Indigenous talent squad and in 2019 was selected in the Townsville Under 12 team. That led to her selection in both the FNQ & NQ indigenous team and the Queensland Under 14 Indigenous team to play on the Gold Coast in January. It was during this trip that K’Larni learned of her selection in the under 13 Australian Budgies team and the Under 12 Australian Budgies school girls team scheduled to play in Sydney in September this year.
K'larni’s determination has seen her achieve so much in that last 2 years and she dreams of one day playing for the Diamonds. K’Larni’s Mum says that she trains hard and plays hard and because of her drive and discipline she is destined to achieve her dreams.
Blinded by Science
There was much going on in the labs across North High in the last week or two as students returned to the classroom. Year 11 Earth and Environmental Science students worked in groups on their experiment assignment. Some groups looked at the effect of changing a soil variable on plant growth and others tested the salinity of water from various locations around our town.
Year 7 Science students are learning to separate mixtures in their chemistry unit. In preparation for their practical assessment, these students are learning to use the correct scientific equipment to separate copper sulphate by evaporation.
Arguably the luckiest group of all were the Year 12 Aquatic Practices class who, as part of their 'ocean to plate' unit were fortunate enough to enjoy some locally caught seafood which they prepared and cooked, themselves.

Year 9 Mathematics
Year 9 students in Mathematics have been learning trigonometry, and in Mr Newell’s 9A LEAP class, students used a variety of equipment including measuring tapes and clinometers to collect data in order to calculate the heights of some school buildings, large trees and the local water tower.
Students also were able to use a recently purchased piece of equipment, a laser range finder, to check their answers using a precision engineering tool.
Through these activities, students could see the real-world applications of trigonometry and expand their knowledge of technology.
