BNSHS Newsletter 24th November
From the Principal's office

Last week we farewelled our Year 12 graduates. Congratulations and best wishes to all our year 12 students as they begin their next chapter. It was a pleasure seeing the students graduate after two years of uncertainty with COVID 19. It was wonderful to see so many family and friends who joined us on Wednesday evening for the Year 12 Graduation ceremony and then on Thursday evening the students enjoyed their Prom. After the significant weather event that occurred on Wednesday night and Thursday morning causing some our graduates to be cut off by rising flood waters at Moore Park, mother nature was kind to us by the afternoon to allow all our students to be able to attend the Prom. The students all looked spectacular and had a great evening.
Last week we saw our RAS classes presenting their donated Christmas hampers to the Salvation Army. This is an annual tradition at North and very well received by the Salvation Army.
On December 1st our uniform contract at LOWES will end and Shawline Embroidery begins as our new uniform supplier. See the link below for our uniform expectations/dress code for 2022. Please ensure that you are purchasing correct uniform items that adhere to the dress code. If you have any concerns or queries please contact the office.
Our Year 10 and 11 students finish their school year on Friday. Students are completing final assessments and staff are beginning reporting. It is important for the year 10 and 11 students to consider their subject selections now for 2022 and make any subject changes now before the start of 2022. Students can discuss their progress with their classroom teacher, Head of Department or Guidance officer to assist with making decisions.
Next year we will be making several changes to programs and processes to enhance student outcomes. We will be introducing a new North Support Structure that is centred around our RAS program – providing support and monitoring of student progress – academic, behaviour, attendance and well-being through a tiered system. We will also be enhancing the LEAP program and providing students with a suite of opportunities to gain skills in areas of interest such as leadership, STEM and the Arts.
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, we will continue with our Friday 5 day structure finishing face to face lessons at 1.10pm on Fridays. Students remaining at school will be supervised by Teacher aides and staff to assist them with their homework. We are still working on trying to secure an extra bus service to assist with transporting some students home and will update you if we hear news. Please remember to complete the registration at the link below if your student WILL be remaining at school on a Friday afternoon.
In 2022, we welcome a new Deputy Principal to our school – Rebecca Watson. She is from Kingaroy SHS. Rebecca will be taking the place of Belinda Arnold who has been appointed to the position of Deputy Principal at Bundaberg SHS. Belinda has been at North for 15 years and I want to thank her for tireless commitment and dedication to her role in supporting the students at North and in particular her work with the Junior school students. She will be a great asset to her new school and will be sadly missed at North.

North High Prom 2021
On Thursday, 18th November our Year 12 students celebrated the end of their education here at North High and will head out into the world to chase their dreams and make their mark. We wish them all the best and are so proud of their journey and their achievements. We also thank the families and community who supported them along the way.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Name: Nick See
Graduating Year: 2015
Best memories from high school: Rowing regattas with Tibbey, jamming in the school band with Mr Lockley and winemaking with Mr Quinn.
What did you do after school?: Alongside a handful of my mates from North High, I moved to Brisbane in 2016. I studied a Bachelor of Advanced Science at UQ and graduated in 2019 with honours in chemistry. During these years, I worked as a laboratory demonstrator for first year students, founded the UQ Chemistry Club with a mate and gained experience in a medicinal chemistry research group.
What are you doing now?: I’m ~ 2 years into my PhD at UQ working under the supervision of two research academics, while also teaching undergraduate students. The project that we came up with ties together physics, chemistry and biology and ultimately has a medicinal focus. My job is to develop a new way to make a family of exceptionally rare and expensive compounds – those that are sort after for incorporation into certain drugs and new vaccine constructs. My typical day involves logging jobs onto a supercomputer to perform quantum chemical calculations at high speed. After this, I’ll venture into the lab, throw on my lab coat and mix chemicals together to start a reaction. Essentially, my routine repeats until I’ve built up a story that can be published in a scientific journal. I’m stoked that my first two papers were accepted this year.
Words of wisdom: The best advice I could currently give is to take up every single opportunity that crosses your path (without burning yourself out, of course). You just never know where they’ll all take you.

Community spirit alive and well
Bundy North, your care and commitment to supporting the wider community is something to be proud of! Our annual charity drive wrapped up today, with 52 boxes being donated to the Salvation Army. These donations will be used to support over 150 families in the Bundaberg region. Thank you to everyone who generously donated.
