BNSHS Newsletter 8th December
From the Principal's Office

This week we are finalising Semester 2 reports to be issued online by the end of the week. The year has drawn to a close and I want to thank the students, staff and parents for their support throughout this challenging year of uncertainty. As we prepare to go on holidays, we are being reminded of the possible impact of COVID 19 once the borders open and are putting in place plans for 2022. We will be communicating with parents via email, SMS, Facebook and/or our school website to bring you current information if circumstances should change over the holidays.
School will commence for students of all year levels at 8:50am on Monday 24th January. Students should come prepared with correct school uniform, writing equipment, at least 2 exercise books for the first day, and their laptop/device if in year 8-12 (Year 7s should bring their device from week 2). Please follow the link below for 2022 'Ready to learn' information. You will find booklists, uniform information, BYOD specifications, canteen menu and guidance for the first day of school in 2022.
As of 1st December 2021 our uniform supplier is Shawline Embroidery. Shawline is located at 17 Walker Street, Bundaberg. Please see our uniform expectations/dress code for 2022. Please ensure that you are purchasing correct uniform items that adhere to the dress code. If you have any concerns or queries please contact the office.
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, next year we will be making several changes to programs and processes to enhance student outcomes. We will be introducing a new North Support Structure that is centred around our RAS program – providing support and monitoring of student progress – academic, behaviour, attendance and well-being through a tiered system. We will also be enhancing the LEAP program and providing students with a suite of opportunities to gain skills in areas of interest such as leadership, STEM and the Arts.
We will continue adopting the timetable structure for Friday 5 with students finishing at 1.10pm and able to go home. Students unable to travel home and requiring bus transport are able to remain at school and participate in Friday 5 – gaining assistance with their homework from teacher aides and staff. Teachers are engaged in curriculum professional development during Friday 5 to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the curriculum and designing teaching strategies to meet the needs of their students.
It is very pleasing to note that there have been some significant improvements in student results compared to 2020.
- Students in Year 8 have shown 16 % improvement in English A-C results & 5% increase in Math.
- Students in Year 9 have shown 13 % improvement in English A-C results & 4% increase in Math.
- Students in Year 10 have shown 15 % improvement in English A-C results & 32% increase in Math.
We will be collecting the latest results from Semester 2 once finalised this week.
I would like to wish you and your family a very safe and enjoyable holiday break and look forward to seeing you in the New Year. If you have any queries please email or contact the office.
Merry Christmas.

On Tuesday, 7 December a rewards and engagement excursion to Splitters farm was held for our Indigenous students, Flexi students and junior platinum award winners. It was a beautiful day and our hosts at the farm were very accommodating. We were led on a farm tour by Farmer Carley who spoke to us about all the animals we met. The goats were the most popular but my favourite were the cows. Many of the animals on the farm are rescue animals and the money we paid as entry fee is used to feed and pay for vet bills.
After our tour Farmer Carley took us to the camp kitchen where Farmer Tenielle was preparing damper for us. Farmer Carley showed the students how to prepare the damper to wrap around their sticks so that they could be cooked in the open camp fire. Once the ‘twisties’ were cooked the students were treated to a choice of Nutella, Splitters Farm honey or syrup to put on or in their Twisties. This was a very popular activity, as was playing with Farmer Carley’s puppy, Dougie.
Lastly was a relaxing lunch break. The students were treated to wraps, chocolate muffins and chocolate mousse all made by the wonderful school tuckshop ladies (thank you Jackie).
It was a lovely day and all the students were well behaved and great examples of the North way. Thank you to Mrs Thornton and Carley Long who organised the day for us and to Mr Williams and Mrs Long for their help on the day.

The Year 9 Business crew conducted an end of year business venture selling various products from local business “TAYM The Label” in Week 9 of school. We would like to thank everyone who supported the students and made a purchase.
