From the Principal's office

It was pleasing to see so many students returning to school last week. Thank you to the many parents who ensured that their children arrived with the correct uniform and equipment and were ready for a great start in 2022. Students have been given 2 weeks to attend to and discuss any uniform concerns with their RAS Coordinator so that together we can try to resolve any issue. From February 21st we will be implementing our new process for uniform violations. Students should bring a note from home if they are out of uniform on a particular day. We will assist in providing the necessary uniform item for the day. We are happy to help any families with any concerns about accessing uniforms. Students should check the uniform guidelines in their homework diary if they are unsure. All students were issued with a homework diary that they should have with them in every class. Students should ensure they have their name on their diary and their timetable safely secured.
Congratulations to our new year 7 students who have been learning to read their timetable and find their classrooms. They had a very positive start to the first week and have been assisting and providing support to one another.
Last week we had our first Friday 5 lesson with most students leaving the school grounds safely at 1:10pm. Thank you to the parents for organising transport. Students remaining at school worked on their homework and were supervised by teacher aides. Our teachers began their curriculum collaboration meetings that provide time for teachers to enhance the delivery of curriculum programs to our students.
Some very positive outcomes were achieved last year in improving students results. The number of students gaining an A, B, or C for English and Maths showed improvement in most year levels which was an excellent result. The following improvements were gained from Semester 1 to Semester 2.
Curriculum
Subject | Year level | Sem 1, 2021 | Sem 2, 2021 | Improvement |
ENGLISH A-C results | 7 | 72% | 82% | 10% improvement |
8 | 78% | 79% | 1% | |
9 | 66% | 75% | 9% | |
10 | 66% | 75% | 9% | |
Essential English | 11 ENE | 60% | 67% | 7% |
General English | 11 ENG | 83% | 86% | 3% |
Year level | Sem 1, 2021 | Sem 2, 2021 | Improvement | |
MATH | 7 | 72% | 80% | 8% |
10 | 37% | 49% | 12% | |
General Math | 11 MAG | 82% | 88% | 6% |
Mathematical Methods | 11 MAM | 55% | 100% | 45% |
Students and staff will be working this year on further improving results with the aim of reaching 85% of students gaining A-C outcomes.
If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us. We want to stay engaged with parents and carers. You can send an email or phone the office and we will endeavour to assist you in the best possible way.
COVID UPDATE
Last week we hade a small number of positive COVID cases reported and parents/carers of students from classes or year levels of those that may have been in contact were sent emails. Please monitor for flu like symptoms and keep your student home if they are unwell. If students develop symptoms while at school, we will contact parents and ask them to collect their student along with a rapid antigen test (R.A.T.) Students should isolate for 7 days if positive along with close contacts (that is household members).
We ask that parents notify us if any of their children attending North test positive so that we can keep our school community informed. We will not be releasing the names of those who test positive but will alert year/class groups to be monitoring health.
If you have any concerns or queries about COVID related issues please do not hesitate to contact the office on 4130 0222.
Keep safe.

North Rewards is how we recognise the positive behaviour, actions and achievements of students at Bundaberg North SHS. Gotchas are proving very popular! Over the last week students have been collecting Gotchas and handing them in to their RAS Head of Department to count towards RAS HOUSE points. At the moment Mabbro is in the lead with 216 Gotchas. Each week the tally is shared with students. For every Gotcha that goes into the RAS HOUSE boxes, students go in the draw for a $5 tuckshop voucher.
Did you know? There are twelve different Gotchas to collect. Each Gotcha includes an inspiring saying or statement. Students have been enjoying the challenge of collecting the twelve different Gotcha sayings!

Positive Postcards are another way staff at Bundaberg North SHS can recognise positive student behaviour and achievement. These postcards will be handed to the student from the staff member and an email or phone call made home with the good news! Each time a student receives a Positive Postcard, they also receive ten bonus Gotchas!
Each term the school has a Reward Day. To attend this day students must have achieved 90% attendance for the current term and have only positive behaviours or minor behaviours recorded, ie, no suspensions. We would also like input from students, parents and carers with ideas for what could be part of these Reward Days. The aim is to make these days free to students or at a low cost, so please consider this when making suggestions.
Do you have an idea for a Reward Day? Please feel free to share your idea at the Bundaberg North SHS Suggestion Box

Student Council badge ceremony
The Bundaberg North SHS Student Council badge ceremony was held on Tuesday, 15th February to welcome our new Student Council members to their positions for 2022. In a slightly different format this year, the students were presented with their certificate and badge in a small ceremony rather than a full Parade. These remarkable young people will be the voice of their peers at Student Council meetings and represent the North High student body. They are all wonderful role models and we congratulate them.

Intl. Day of Women & Girls in Science
As part of the year 8 unit ‘Rocks Never Die’ students are growing crystals at different temperatures to investigate crystal size. On Friday, to celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the girls in Mrs Upuli Sudasinghe’s class posed while doing the practical and showed off the amazing results, of their crystal growing investigation. Swimming Carnival Consent Form
This form is not activeAre you ready to LEAP into excellence?
We believe that all students can reach their dreams when given the right opportunity and support. Our LEAP program, provides all students with opportunities throughout the year to take the leap towards reaching their potential in the areas of Leadership, Enrichment, Aspiration and Passion.
The LEAP program invites students to participate in LEAP opportunities in the areas of English; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); Creative Arts; Humanities; Sport; and Leadership, Community and Service. These opportunities will provide LEAP students with experiences designed to extend their personal growth and support them to reach their individual goals.
LEAP opportunities take on many forms. Some are offered to selected small groups, others are offered to specific year groups, some are offered to students from across year levels, and some are included as part of our planned curriculum for all students. This gives students greater flexibility to participate in LEAP activities that suit their individual needs by nominating specific activities which best suit their interests and personal goals.
The start to the 2022 school year has been very unusual, but we are very excited to be able to confirm that these LEAP opportunities will be offered to students in Term 1:
Activity | Date | Registration Details |
LEAP into Medieval History | 16th February | This is a curriculum enrichment activity for all Year 8 students, no registration necessary |
LEAP into our First Nations Festival | 23rd February | This is a curriculum enrichment activity for all Year 7 students, no registration necessary |
LEAP into Sport Development | 30th March, 2022 | This is an extension activity from the Sport strand. Interested students from years 7, 8 and 9 are invited to complete a registration form to be considered for this activity. Students will be emailed when registration forms are available. |

"Little Shop of Horrors" coming to North

The staff at Bundaberg North State High School are proud to bring back the school musical despite Covid19. We have a team of staff and parents who have volunteered to assist, to put on the musical “Little Shop of Horrors”.
“Meek flower shop assistant Seymour pines for co-worker Audrey. During a total eclipse, he discovers an unusual plant he names Audrey II, which feeds only on human flesh and blood. The growing plant attracts a great deal of business for the previously struggling store. After Seymour feeds Audrey's boyfriend, Orin, to the plant after Orin's accidental death, he must come up with more bodies for the increasingly bloodthirsty plant.”
We are looking forward to see our students shine as we put on this musical. Performances will be on the 13th and 14th May in the school hall.
We would also like to thank the Playhouse Theatre and the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre for their support in putting this musical on.
Most of all we would like to thank all of the parents of the students that participate in the musical, be it be onstage or backstage, for their support. Without the support of families of those involved events like these would not happen, so for that I thank you in advance.
