From the Principal's Office

Over the weekend many of our families, friends and colleagues were impacted by rain and flooding that occurred in the southern parts of Queensland. While Bundaberg escaped the heavy rain, we are thinking of all those who have been affected by the floods. It will no doubt be a long road to recovery.
Last week we had students participating in the Lions’ Youth of the Year Public Speaking competition. Congratulations to Byron and Jayne who gave excellent presentations and will now be representing the North Bundaberg and Moore Park Lion’s clubs respectively at the regional finals on March 12th. Good luck to both students.
Well done to the many students who have been receiving Gotcha rewards for displaying positive behaviour in and out of the classroom. It has been great to see so many students excited about collecting the Gotchas and being able to be rewarded for some excellent behaviour and wearing of the uniform.
School sport on Wednesday afternoons has begun. Thank you to the many students who have joined sporting teams and participated in their first round of matches.
The GPs in schools pilot program is set to commence in term two and renovations to accommodate the GP and nurse are almost complete. The clinic will operate one day per week. In this newsletter I have provided further information about the upcoming program and more details will be released each newsletter prior to the launch of the Program. Five schools across Queensland have already begun their GP clinics and we look forward to beginning in Term 2.
Thank you to the students and staff who have been adhering to the COVID guidelines and working on keeping our school community as safe as possible. We have only had a small number positive COVID cases amongst the staff and students but we continue to observe good hygiene practices. New information about the removal of mask wearing after 6pm March 4th has been released. When we receive details from the Department of Education I will share this with you.
Stay safe.

GPs in Schools
As previously mentioned, we are one of 50 State High Schools to participate in the GPs in Schools Pilot this year.
The Pilot is part of the Queensland Government’s Student Wellbeing Package. The initiative is designed to make it easier for adolescents in Queensland schools to access healthcare.
The Pilot will allow our school to set up a GP clinic on school grounds. This clinic will provide students with access to a GP one day each week, during school terms.
The GP clinic will open in Term 2 and we will be providing you with more details about procedures as the time nears.
What services will the GP provide?
Our school GP clinic will offer secondary students the majority of services that young people are able to access from GPs in the community. Please note that this is not a COVID vaccination clinic and NO vaccinations will be given by the GP.
Will there be a cost for students to see the GP?
All visits to the GP will be provided at no cost to students or their families if they have a Medicare card.
Friday 5 in 2022
If you are new to the school the term 'Friday 5' may be something you have not heard of before. At Bundaberg North State High School, students finish timetabled classess at 1.10pm each Friday. Students may leave school to go home. However, we understand that not every family is able to accommodate the early finish, and cannot provide transport or supervision for their child at this time, and the school provides supervision for these students until 3.00pm. Students who remain at school can work on assessment, complete homework or use it to sharpen their skills in a certain area. Buses run to their normal schuedule with the first bus leaving North High after 3.00pm.
If your student WILL be staying until 3.00pm on a Friday, we ask that you complete and submit the form below.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO COMPLETE THE FORM IF YOUR STUDENT WILL BE LEAVING SCHOOL AT 1.10PM ON A FRIDAY.
Friday 5 - Students remaining at school until 3pm Term 1, 2022

At Bundaberg North SHS we recognise the positive behaviour, actions and achievements of students through our North Rewards program. Students have been demonstrating the school values of Respect, Responsibility and Safety in the classroom and playground to earn Gotchas! Students hand in their Gotchas for an ice block and to contribute to RAS House points. It is a hotly contested weekly total, that changes from week to week. Last week Tirroan was in the lead with 1012, but now Monduran is leading with 1935 Gotchas! Well done to all RAS Houses. Each week one lucky student from each RAS House is drawn from the RAS House Gotcha box for a $5 tuckshop voucher. This week we also have twenty Moscow Circus vouchers to give away too, which were kindly donated by Moscow Circus.
Did you know? Gotchas come in different colours. Currently we have white and yellow Gotchas. What colour will be next?

Reward Days are another way to recognise excellent behaviour, but also students demonstrating respect and responsibility, through excellent attendance. To attend the Reward Day each term a student is required to have achieved 90% attendance for the current term and have only positive behaviours or minor behaviours recorded, ie, no suspensions. Thank you for the suggestions we have received from students and parents/carers. The school is currently compiling a Reward Menu, that will give students a choice of reward for their Reward Day. This will be shared in the next newsletter.
Student Diary
The Student Diary is a useful resource for students, teachers, parents and carers. Have you recently checked your child’s diary? Has your child been recording their homework? The Student Diary is a place for students to record their homework and assessment dates, as well as a resource with useful information, including:
- Assessment Quick Guide – page 13
- Reference Guide – page 14 / 15
- 2022 Planner – great for adding assessment draft and due dates
- Weekly opening – write in homework, assessment draft and due dates.
If a student has lost their diary they can purchase a new one from the office at a cost of $15. Alternatively, they could use one they purchase from local shops. The school dairy is preferred as it contains school specific information. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Better Buddies: Anti-bullying committee
On Friday the 18th of March (Week 8) our school and the nation will be raising awareness for the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence, Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative.
The theme for 2022 is Kindness Culture. By building Kindness Culture together, we can promote inclusion, respect and community belonging for all students in schools across Australia.
Bundaberg North State High School, in particular the Better Buddies Anti-Bullying Committee, has worked hard to create a welcoming and inclusive community no matter what culture, religion, gender or age a person is. Therefore, on the 18th of March and the week leading up to the National Day of Action, the Better Buddies will be hosting a variety of activities to promote our anti-bullying culture.
All students are welcome and included in these activities (which will be posted on our Student Notices, read out each morning in RAS). In addition, on Friday the 18th of March, students and teachers are invited to wear their Bundaberg North State High School anti-bullying shirts. Please note that this is NOT a free dress day, instead students can opt to wear their anti-bullying shirts with their school shorts. Our anti-bullying shirts, come in 4 colours (blue, red, yellow and green) and a variety of sizes, and can be purchased from A Block for $10.
We hope that by creating awareness of Kindness Culture and promoting an anti-bullying culture, our school will continue to thrive.
Mrs Anderson, RAS Coordinator

Year 7 camp - the countdown is on...
All year 7 students have now received an information note about our upcoming camp. This exciting event will give students an opportunity to build resilience, confidence and deepen connections with their peers and teachers.
Students should return notes to Mrs Gray in G Block. Invoices have been issued and deposits must be paid before 25th March.
We’re so excited!

Stimulus excursion to K'Gari
A day away from school is every student’s dream. Sometimes dreams become reality and go to the next level - with a visit to paradise!! Senior Visual Art General students visited K’gari on 15 Feb, with a day trip to Kingfisher Bay resort.
The purpose of our visit was to gather stimulus images and to experience the natural beauty the island has to offer. Students are currently studying the cultural continuum of the Badtjala people and their surrounding Gubbi Gubbi land, and the disruption of this connection caused by the stories told by Eliza Fraser. Witnessing evidence of occupation through learning about scar trees and traditional medicines, we taste tested our way around the resort to the bemused stares of sunbaking guests. Stay tuned for future artworks developing in response to our new-found knowledge.

Lions Youth of the Year Public Speaking Competition
Last week, Year 12 students Byron Lerch and Jayne Wake participated in the Lions Youth of the Year Public Speaking Competition representing the BUNDABERG NORTH LIONS CLUB and the MOORE PARK LIONS CLUB. Both students attended an interview in the morning at school with the three Judges and in the evening delivered a 5 minute prepared speech on a topic of their choice. They were also required to respond to 2 two-minute impromptu questions.
Both Byron and Jayne held the audience’s attention with their interesting and well delivered prepared speeches. The Judges and audience were extremely impressed. Byron was announced as the Overall Public Speaking Winner on the night.
Congratulations Byron and Jayne. You did BNSHS proud and we wish you both luck as you progress to the Regional Final on Saturday 12 March.

First Nations celebrations
Our Year 7s celebrated our First Nations Festival with a variety of activities – examining artefacts, face-painting, story-telling, Indigenous games and of course boomerang throwing and eating kangaroo meat. As part of our Humanities’ unit the students had the opportunity to actively learn and enjoy exploring the rich culture of our First Nations’ people.
Miss Rayner, Head of Department

Medieval Day
Our students revelled in the chance to be a princess or a peasant during our Medieval Mania. Some were put into the stocks with water-balls flying at them in punishment. While others designed coat of arms or successfully made miniature trebuchets. Life was certainly different and difficult back then.
Miss Rayner, Head of Department

Clean Up Australia Day

This Sunday, the 6th of March, is Clean Up Australia Day! All students are invited to join the Planeteers at 3pm at Moore Park Beach on Sunday for an hour of cleaning up the beach and park. We will meet at the picnic tables near the Surf Lifesaving building. Bags and gloves will be supplied but you are welcome to bring your own gloves. Parents/carers are also welcome to join us for the clean up. Students should wear full school uniform, including correct footwear for safety. Bring your own hat. Permission forms are available from Mrs Roberts in upper C block staffroom. If you decide to join us on the day, there will be permission forms on site that you can get a parent/carer to complete before we set off.
Can't make it Sunday? We will also be hosting a school clean up event on Friday at first break. Buckets and tongs will be supplied. Meet between the library and science blocks. 1 bucket of rubbish returned = 5 gotchas + 1 bucket less of rubbish potentially making its way to the reef.
Mrs Roberts, Planeteers Coordinator

Japan’s Hakuo High School Students are Coming this Year
It has now been confirmed that a group of 20 students aged 14-17 years old will be coming from Japan during the fortnight 27th July – 8th August 2022. They will spend 5 days in our school, 3 days at CQU and a day trip to Isis’ Snakes Down Under to cuddle a snake and take a photo with a koala. It will be good to have the international friendship after not being able to do so over the past two years. Our students may be involved as host families or school buddies; be part of classes with Japanese students in attendance. It is all part of the experience for both our North High and the Japanese school students.
We’ve had a good initial response to our request for host families but more are needed. “Families” may be from students at this school or from the wider community who would like to participate. Perhaps there is someone that you know, extended family or friends, who has a spare bed and would be good at hosting an international student for the fortnight. Please note that host families will receive a small payment for hosting students and are responsible for their food and transport to school.
It is planned for this to be an annual event so if you are unavailable this year but would like to be considered as a host family, for future events, please let us know so that you may be added to our registry of host families.
We will select families by:
- Homestay Family application form
- Blue card check (school can organise a card at no cost to you – needs to be done a.s.a.p.)
- House inspection (guests need to have their own bed but may be sharing a room)
- Matching students with families eg. interests, non-allergies to pets ..
To express your interest or to proceed further with application forms, please email krayn24@eq.edu.au or phone 41300315

Again, Bundaberg North State High School is taking part in the Leukaemia Foundations’ fundraiser. This event is organised by our Year 11 Student Council members, along with Mr Hogan. Students have the opportunity to either ‘Colour’ their hair (wash out spray) or be brave and SHAVE!! We have qualified hairdressers/apprentices that clip the students hair – to whatever blade they wish. A ‘minimum’ gold coin donation is required if students colour their hair. Students are expected to ‘fundraise’ if they are going to ‘shave’.
