From the Principal's Office

It is hard to believe we have reached the end of Term 1 already. Thank you for enduring the many interruptions and the impact that COVID has had on everyone this term. Staff and students have continued the teaching and learning process under some challenging circumstances and I thank all involved for their persistence and commitment to complete work. Congratulations to the students who have managed to avoid illness and have achieved 100% attendance. What an accomplishment considering such a challenging term.
Reports will be issued at the end of this week They will be progress reports only and may not be based on completed assessment. We wanted to provide parents and students with an update on progress so far. Student Progress Conferences (parent/student/teacher interviews) will be held on April 28th and I would strongly encourage you all to make appointments to see your students' teachers to discuss the progress of your child/children. This is a great opportunity for some rich conversations to occur . Parents can follow the link below to make bookings through the SOBS online website.
Last week we released information to students about the upcoming GP in Schools program starting May 3rd. Bookings to see the GP will be able to be made online/emailing or in person at the office. We have developed an information page on our school website for more information.
Last week, thanks to an enthusiastic Mr Hogan, year 11 helpers and Mrs Renz, we conducted a fundraising activity for ‘Shave for a Cure’. Thank you to all those involved and to the generous donations. Well done to those students and staff who participated and had their heads shaved or coloured.
We conducted our annual Swimming carnival this week (having been postponed from the start of the year). Thanks to Mr Thatcher, Mr Shield, staff and the sport and house captains for their work putting this event together. It was a great way to end the term and see all the students having an enjoyable day and earning points for their houses. Results of the carnival will be released after the holidays at a full school assembly.
Could I please ask that if your student is leaving school at 1.10pm they go directly home or are under parent supervision. We ask that you do not give permission for your student to go to the Botanical Gardens at this time. This request has been made by the staff at the Gardens and is supported by the school.
Below you will see the form to complete if your student will be remaining at school for Friday 5 in term 2.
I wish you all a safe and enjoyable Easter holiday break.
Robyn Kent, Principal

Rewards update
GOTCHA UPDATE
School Captain Byron, asked me at the pool yesterday if I had any waterproof Gotchas! Why didn’t I think if that! Gotchas are the way we recognise positive student behaviour at Bundaberg North SHS. Each RAS House is steadily increasing their totals. There are still many, many Gotchas in circulation that are yet been handed in! Well done to Tirroan for leading the way with over 6000 Gotchas. Watch out as Monduran and Mabbro are close behind.
There are currently white, yellow and purple Gotchas. ALL white Gotchas need to be handed in before the end of term (this Friday 1 April) as we make way for new and exciting Gotcha initiatives next term. This includes other options when students ‘cash in’ their Gotchas, new colours, and specially marked Gotchas. Look out for Gotchas next term!
REWARD DAY
Tomorrow is our first REWARD DAY for 2022! This is an opportunity to positively recognise our students. Over 260 students qualified for the reward day this term, using attendance and behaviour criteria. The students' choices of pizza, tuckshop voucher or movie and popcorn, were fairly evenly split, with the $5 tuckshop voucher being the most popular choice.
Some information about students receiving their reward:
Tuckshop vouchers were distributed today through the office. If students did not collect it today, they can do so anytime this week or next term. The tuckshop voucher does not have an expiry date, but we encourage students to use it by the end of term 2.
The ‘pizza party’ is tomorrow at first break. Each student that chose this as their reward will receive one whole Domino’s pizza. Students will collect their pizza from outside the admin building at the start of first break.
The Movie & Popcorn at school is a great way to spend an afternoon. This will be held during second break and period 5 tomorrow. At the end of period 4 these students go to M04. They will receive individually packed popcorn ready for 'The Emoji Movie'.
THANK YOU students for your support and enthusiasm for the North Rewards program at Bundaberg North SHS. THANK YOU for demonstrating our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Safety. As this is a new initiative, we welcome feedback from students and parents/carers regarding the program. Please see the attached Reward Day Menu. Have a safe and happy holiday.
Mrs Rebecca Watson, Deputy Principal

Gala Day - Friday 1st April

Friday this week is Gala Day. Students and teachers from our school will be participating in and coaching inter-school sports competitions.
On this day, year 11 and 12 classes will be collapsed, and supervised collectively. Year 11 and 12 students should prepare themselves to work independently, and ensure they have the latest instructions from their subject teachers, to ensure they can make good use of their time. A charged device will be an important piece of equipment on Friday. Good luck to all of our sporting teams.

Swimming Carnival
On Tuesday, 29th March the Bundaberg North SHS swimming carnival was held at Norville Pool. The sun shone brightly for the annual day of fun and competition and house rivalry was on display as students battled for points. Individual results and house points will be published when they are finalised.

Legal Studies comes alive in the classroom
On Tuesday, 22 March the year 11 and 12 Legal Studies class welcomed two staff from the Queensland Parliament into their classroom. These two women, an Education Officer and an Indigenous Information Officer, presented the students information about our Parliament in Queensland as well as providing the students with an exciting and interactive role-play experience.
The students were provided with a mock bill (The School Hours Amendment Bill) and had the opportunity to role-play the passage of the bill through the Queensland Parliament. Students played roles such as the Premier, Education Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Shadow Minister for Education, Government and opposition Whip, Sergeant at Arms and Clerk of the Parliament. The room was set up in the traditional Parliament U shape and students were expected to speak for or against the bill. Students were also encouraged to act like Parliamentarians with ‘here here’ or other interjections.
The activity provided the students with a real example of how the Parliament runs and was very much enjoyed by all. The students were particularly impressed by the replica Mace, with many students having photos taken with it. The visit was a fantastic opportunity for our students as this experience is usually only provided by a visit to Parliament House in Brisbane. We were very fortunate to be included in the regional visit by the Educational Officer, and we thank them for that opportunity.
Year 11 students are looking forward to their excursion next year where they may get to visit Parliament House as well as the Supreme Court.
Mrs Burrell, Legal Studies Teacher

Better Buddies: Anti-Bullying Committee
On Thursday and Friday of Week 8, our school celebrated the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. The theme for 2022 was Kindness Culture.
The Better Buddies Anti-Bullying Committee ran a variety of successful activities throughout the school, including: mindful colouring in the library, RAS videos, a Stymie stand with a guessing game competition and an Instagram photo frame wherein students could get photos with our mascot, Buddy Bear. In addition, it was delightful to see so many students and teachers wearing their anti-bullying shirts on Friday in support of the National Day of Action.
The Better Buddies were also incredibly excited to welcome Bundaberg’s mayor, Jack Dempsey, to our school to discuss the National Day of Action and the work our committee does to encourage inclusivity and kindness. Mr Dempsey’s visit was a wonderful way to finish off our celebrations and days of awareness, and he especially loved meeting our one and only, Buddy Bear!
I would like to thank the many students and teachers that supported the Kindness Culture movement over those two days. I would also like to recognise the hard work of the Better Buddies, Rebecca Watson, Robyn Kent, Rick Hogan and Janelle Hearn. Organising events such as these would not be possible without your assistance and enthusiasm.
Claire Anderson, Better Buddies Coordinator.
CQU Experience Day

On Friday the 18th of March interested Year 12 students from the region participated in CQUniversity's Uni Experience Day. Students could experience a day in the life of a uni student, try out some courses and meet other student with similar interests. Many areas of study were on offer to create the students' own personalised timetable. Areas included: aviation, agriculture, business, digital media, education, STEM, nursing, physiotherapy, psychology, medical science, and engineering.
Miss Coulton, Guidance Officer
Little Shop of Horrors

Sadly, due to the number of staff and students absent from school recently, rehearsals for the BNSHS 'Little Shop of Horrors' have been affected. The decision has been made to postpone the musical until 2023. However, we would still like to offer our students, families and community something to look forward to....so watch this space

International Opportunity

Japan’s Hakuo High School Students are Coming this Year
It has now been confirmed that a group of 20 students aged 14-17 years old will be coming from Japan during the fortnight 27th July – 8th August 2022. They will spend 5 days in our school, 3 days at CQU and a day trip to Isis’ Snakes Down Under to cuddle a snake and take a photo with a koala. It will be good to have the international friendship after not being able to do so over the past two years. Our students may be involved as host families or school buddies; be part of classes with Japanese students in attendance. It is all part of the experience for both our North High and the Japanese school students.
We’ve had a good initial response to our request for host families but more are needed. “Families” may be from students at this school or from the wider community who would like to participate. Perhaps there is someone that you know, extended family or friends, who has a spare bed and would be good at hosting an international student for the fortnight. Please note that host families will receive a small payment for hosting students and are responsible for their food and transport to school.
It is planned for this to be an annual event so if you are unavailable this year but would like to be considered as a host family, for future events, please let us know so that you may be added to our registry of host families.
We will select families by:
- Homestay Family application form
- Blue card check (school can organise a card at no cost to you – needs to be done a.s.a.p.)
- House inspection (guests need to have their own bed but may be sharing a room)
- Matching students with families eg. interests, non-allergies to pets ..
To express your interest or to proceed further with application forms, please email krayn24@eq.edu.au or phone 41300315
