Thank you to the parents who attended the Student Progress Conferences in our hall on April 28th to meet with teachers and discuss term 1 progress. Parents/carers are able to contact teachers at any time to discuss progress but it is a good opportunity at the Progress Conferences to meet with a number of teachers at once to work together to support our students.
NAPLAN begins this week for Year 7 and 9 students. NAPLAN testing will be conducted online using school devices and students will be working in their classes to complete the suite of NAPLAN tests over a number of days. Reading, Writing, Grammar and Spelling and Numeracy will be tested.
Last week we conducted a 3 day Year 7 camp to Garapine in Gympie. Congratulations to all the students who attended and a big thank you to the Mrs Gray for her organisation of the camp and to our teachers Mr Quinn, Mr Hogan, Mrs Foskett, Ms Knight and Mrs Hearn for attending and working with the students. The students returned buzzing with excitement and having made some new friends.
Last week we had our Reach for the Sky Awards recognising the excellent behaviour and effort of students in Term 1. I would like to congratulate all those who achieved a Bronze, Silver or Gold award. Well done.
Last week also we began our GP in Schools program. I would like to welcome the clinic staff to our school. They will be taking student appointments each Tuesday and bookings can be made through our school website, by emailing GP@bundabergnorthshs.eq.edu.au or by visiting the G Block student counter.
Finally, I want to notify you of the concerns with students having access to vapes at school. Vaping has been in the news of late and causing nationwide concern for young people. We have had several incidents with students bringing and using vapes at school. Vapes are not permitted to be brought to or used on school grounds. This is detailed in the Student Code of Conduct. Students will be given consequences if vapes are brought to or used at school. I ask that parents/carers discuss this with their children so that we can work together to support the health and wellbeing of our students. I also encourage students to let us know if they see or know of vaping occurring so that we can best support our students.
Robyn Kent, Principal
Winter uniform warmers
As the weather turns cooler, parents begin to ask us about winter uniform options for their student. This year we have added some new winter options to our school uniform and these can be purchased from SHAWLINE EMBROIDERY, 17 Walker Street, Bundaberg - Ph: 41528139.
There is a new jumper/sloppy joe, a zip-up jacket, track pants, and a bucket hat, all of which carry the approved Bundaberg North State High School logo.

Friday 5 registration - Term 3
Friday 5 - Students remaining at school until 3pm Term 3, 2022

Earlier in the term, I spoke with students on a Teams Parade about organising their weekly study planner. Now in week 4 students should have set up their weekly study plan to complete homework, assessments and revise work. It is important for students to have a study routine and employ different study skills for different subjects and tasks. There are many different ways for students to ‘study’. Please see the list below. If students need support to set up a weekly study routine, please contact their RAS Coordinator.

GOTCHA UPDATE
Exciting news… new pink Gotchas from today! The pink Gotchas are special Gotchas given out by school leaders. They will be recognising students who follow the school values of respect, responsibility and safety. When students receive a pink Gotcha, it can be handed in with other Gotcha to their RAS Head of Department, but will be added to a special Parade draw for the end of term.
Hot chocolates are coming!
Starting next week students can ‘cash in’ 30 Gotchas in exchange for a hot chocolate voucher (see photo). Students take their voucher to the tuckshop to receive a free hot chocolate. Yum!
Available times: Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday 8am – 8:30am.
Mrs Watson, Deputy Principal

Year 7 camp
On Wednesday 4th May an intrepid group of Year 7 students and a group of nervous teachers set off on a grand adventure – our first year 7 camp!
We had a fabulous two nights exploring the Garapine campsite, building and racing billy karts, climbing a stack of crates, kayaking the Mary River and practising survival skills with shelter building, fire making and damper cooking. We were certainly tired after all these adventures, especially with all the mountain hiking between activities.
Camp tested our resilience, took us out of our comfort zones and forged new friendships and on the third day we loaded up the buses and trekked home, tired but happy with lots of new memories.
Some of the students' favourite moments - in their words:
- Getting to know others and what they like
- The best thing about camp was going kayaking and spending time with my friends.
- We got to learn new things
- Mrs Hearn’s friend the stick insect
- Seeing a snake outside the bunkhouse and a possum at the mess hall
- Crate stack!
Thank you to our school and amazing P&C for their support to generously subsidise the cost of camp so that so many students could participate.
We are already excitedly planning for 2023!
Mrs Gray, Head of Department

CQU Schools Business Challenge 2022
On Tuesday evening 26th April, Year 12 Business students Byron, Vanessa, Jake and Shae represented our school at the annual CQU Business Challenge held out at the Bundaberg campus. Whilst BNSHS did not win, we placed 3rd in the competition and our team did us proud with their enthusiasm, presentation and teamwork. Well done students and thank you to CQU for continuing to host such a worthwhile competition for Business students in the district. We look forward to participating in it each and every year.
Keri Jensen, Year 12 Business Teacher

2022 Cross Country
The 2022 Cross Country was held on Wednesday 20th April. Around 70 students battled either the 3km, 4km or 6km circuit. The open course provided a great spectacle as the runners made their way through variety of terrain around the challenging circuit. With house pride on the line, many athletes pushed themselves to the limit in order to complete their race, while others took the more social approach, but still gained valuable house points.
As a stepping stone to the District Cross Country, many competitors returned to the course with some retaining their age champion medal, Paige, Liam and Angus. The race also threw up a few surprise results for age-champions. Well done to all age champs
The 2022 House points were very close, emphasising how much ‘team spirit’ and ‘having a go’ can really make a difference! CONGRATULATIONS to MONDURAN House who were triumphant on the day.

Year 11 Tourism excursion
On Wednesday, 4 May the two year 11 Tourism classes ventured off to Moore Park Beach. The aim of the excursion was for students to look at Moore Park Beach through the eyes of a tourist. The students were taken to the park beside the old Surf Club and told to walk around the area (safely), take photos and experience what it is like for people who go there as tourists. The second part to the excursion was that the students will now have to write an assignment on ways to improve tourism for Moore Park Beach. They are able to either propose a new tourism venture (permanent structure), tourist attraction or tourism idea for the area. Students in the past have made suggestions such as Stand up paddle board hire business or remodelling the surf club to include a café. It will be interesting to see what this group of students come up with. The Bundaberg Tourist Information Centre have said they would be keen to read our most interesting suggestions. Mrs Richardt and I look forward to reading these reports. A most enjoyable time was had by all as Moore Park is a very relaxing place to visit. I personally would encourage you to go and have a look if you haven’t been before.
Mrs Burrell, Toursim teacher

Planeteers celebrate composting week
May 1st to May 7th is International Composting Awareness Week. The North High Planeteers decided to invest some money in starting up some compost bins at our school. We have placed two compost bins beside the rainforest memorial garden for food scraps and garden waste in our school. Look out for the green lidded compost caddies in student kitchens in the coming weeks for students to use in cooking lessons. The amazing tuckshop crew are collecting their compostable scraps for us too. Disposing of compostable waste in compost bins instead of general waste bins means less going into landfill, and the scraps eventually break down into nutrient rich compost that can be used on our gardens. It's not too late to start your own compost bin at home too. Help us to reduce landfill and recycle our food and garden waste into something useful!
Mrs Roberts, Planeteers Coordinator

Retail Immerse Day
Amber Lutter of Bundaberg Jobs Commitment, an initiative of the Bundaberg Regional Council, initiated the inaugural Retail Immerse Day for Bundaberg Schools. International Opportunity

Japan’s Hakuo High School Students are Coming this Year
It has now been confirmed that a group of 20 students aged 14-17 years old will be coming from Japan during the fortnight 27th July – 8th August 2022. They will spend 5 days in our school, 3 days at CQU and a day trip to Isis’ Snakes Down Under to cuddle a snake and take a photo with a koala. It will be good to have the international friendship after not being able to do so over the past two years. Our students may be involved as host families or school buddies; be part of classes with Japanese students in attendance. It is all part of the experience for both our North High and the Japanese school students.
We’ve had a good initial response to our request for host families but more are needed. “Families” may be from students at this school or from the wider community who would like to participate. Perhaps there is someone that you know, extended family or friends, who has a spare bed and would be good at hosting an international student for the fortnight. Please note that host families will receive a small payment for hosting students and are responsible for their food and transport to school.
It is planned for this to be an annual event so if you are unavailable this year but would like to be considered as a host family, for future events, please let us know so that you may be added to our registry of host families.
We will select families by:
- Homestay Family application form
- Blue card check (school can organise a card at no cost to you – needs to be done a.s.a.p.)
- House inspection (guests need to have their own bed but may be sharing a room)
- Matching students with families eg. interests, non-allergies to pets ..
To express your interest or to proceed further with application forms, please email krayn24@eq.edu.au or phone 41300315
