From the Principal's office

Over the past two weeks students have been involved in a variety of student activities ranging from Under 8s event at North State School, Vicki Wilson Cup – Netball, Year 12 Docudrama, Instrumental music – Fanfare competition, the Year 12 Business and Tourism excursion to Aussieworld, Rugby League 9s and the Maths Team Challenge to name just a few. I would like to congratulate all the students who took part in these activities as the feedback received has been very positive. Well done to all involved. Excursions and student activities require considerable planning and preparation and I want to thank the staff involved for organising the wide range of opportunities for students. I encourage all students to get involved in the opportunities presented.
Over the next two weeks students will be completing Semester 1 assessments. Students have an assessment schedule that they are following to complete set tasks. Parents can see their students' assessment schedule on QParents. If students/parents/carers have any queries please contact individual classroom teachers either by phone or email or contact the relevant Head of Department. We are here to assist. Semester 1 reports will be issued after the holidays in Week 1 of Term 3.
Students in Year 10 are beginning their preparation of the Senior Education Training Plan (SET Plan). Students will be taking part in the Subject Selection process including attending a Subject Selection evening at our hall on July 18th. Please put this date in your diary as students and parents will be provided with information about selecting 2023 year 11 subjects and career/pathways.
On Tuesday July 19th, we will be holding a Year 7 enrolment event – for current year 6 students and their parents/carers to attend to complete enrolment paperwork and learn about the Year 7 program. We encourage all future year 7 students for 2023 to attend. Further details will be sent to Primary schools shortly.
Reminder that there is a P&C meeting on this Thursday June 9th at 6.00pm. We welcome parents and carers. If you would like to join face to face the meetings occur in the Administration building or if you would like to join online please RSVP to the office requesting a Teams invitation to the meeting.
Reminder also that our Athletics carnival is on the last day of term, Friday 24th June. There will be no Friday 5 arrangements on the day as all students and staff will be travelling to the ‘Bundaberg Athletics grounds for the day. Students will be travelling by bus. Please complete the permission form online or ring the office to organise permission for your child to attend. The Athletics day is always a great day for students and staff to end the term. We hope to see all students participating.

This form is not activeMr Hogan calls time after 33 years
After 33 years of service to the Department of Education, Mr Ricky Hogan is retiring. On behalf of the students and staff, past and present, I want to thank Rick for the many years of service to education and 12 years to Bundaberg North High. Mr Hogan was a mighty ‘Walla Warrior’ and you always knew when Mr Hogan was at the swimming or athletics carnivals as he brought fantastic energy and enthusiasm. Mr Hogan worked across a number of faculty areas including Humanities, HPE, Maths and English over his time and had recently taken up the role as RAS coordinator.
We wish Mr Hogan all the best for his retirement and thank him sincerely for the outstanding contribution has made to education and the students of North High.

SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS
As a school community we all contribute to students being successful at school. Our core business at school is student engagement with the Australian Curriculum. At school we have a wide range of supports to assist students’ academic success, wellbeing and pathways. These include:
- Teachers working collaboratively each week during Friday 5 to review and develop curriculum and assessment, as well as moderate student work samples to ensure consistency.
- Everyday supports through North Support structure including RAS teachers, RAS Co-ordinators, RAS Heads of Department.
- Staff to assist students with work experience, TAFE Trade Taster programs and career pathways.
- Guidance Officers, School Nurse, General Practitioner (GP).
As parents and carers, we often have queries about our child’s development, schooling or wellbeing. A useful website is Raising Children. This is a website developed by the Australian Government aimed at supporting parents, carers and families. It includes information for children of all ages on all topics from technology to behaviour to mental and physical health. Click on the link below to access the site:
https://raisingchildren.net.au/
In our local community there are many organisations that support our students and families.
Headspace is a free and confidential service where young people aged 12 to 25 years old can access a range of supports. Our local office is 66 Woongarra St, Bundaberg. Phone: 4152 3931 or visit:
Reach Out is an Australian website with a focus on physical and mental health for young people, parents and schools. Topics include bullying, relationships, wellbeing, study, work and money.
Remember if you need support for your child or family, please talk to us. Make a call to our office and someone will be able to connect you to someone who can help.

YEAR 10 - SENIOR EDUCATION AND TRAINING (SET) PLANNING
The Year 10 students have been busy during their SETP lessons working towards completing their ‘SET plan’ in term 3. This term they have completed career planning activities, viewed subject Insight videos, and had visits from each Head of Department about subject offerings for years 11 and 12. This is an important time for year 10 students as they think about post school pathways and their transition into senior schooling. In term 3 all students and their parents/carers attend a SET plan interview to discuss future pathways and subject selections. Some important upcoming events:
- Tuesday 21 June – during SETP students will complete initial subject selection survey that will provide valuable information for subject lines.
- Monday 18 July – subject selection information evening – 6pm at school hall. All students, parents and carers encouraged to attend.
- Monday 25 July – Monday 1 August – SET plan interviews – parents/carers to book through SOBS – see link provided
- CQU Experience Day – Thursday, 11th August. This is a free event for year 10 students in term 3 to explore and experience the opportunities and programs available at Central Queensland University.
- Work experience - 12th to 16th September 2022.
This is an exciting time for year 10 students as they start to consider their senior pathway and future careers. It is important for them to participate in all aspects of this process and have a good understanding of pathways and subjects. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Year 12 Aquatic Practices
Year 12 Aquatic Practices – Unit culmination.
As we reach the end of our unit on sustainable fisheries and fishing practices, students plan, purchase and prepare a seafood dish. The seafood comes from local supplier Grunske’s seafood market. Students learn to communicate as a group, make budgeting decisions and learn barbequing style - a great Australian tradition. This year has proven to be one of the best displays of seafood dishes with entree’s through to dessert prepared and cooked on the barbie.

Welcome back Jack!
The Drama department had a ‘blast from the past’ on Wednesday 7/6/2022 with a visit from ex-Northie, Jackson McGovern. Jack was the school captain in 2008 and since leaving school has forged a career in the theatre. He was here as the teaching artist from The Queensland Theatre Company, leading the future Year 10 Drama students through a workshop. The workshop forms part of The Scene project, an initiative of The Queensland Theatre Company which provides students from regional areas the opportunity to work with theatre professionals, such as Jack, to hone their skills and develop original works to be performed at larger venues, such as the Moncrieff Theatre here in Bundaberg. The students worked enthusiastically with Jack during the workshop and have gained some valuable experience in the theatre arts.

Maths Team Challenge

Students from years 7-12 had a great day at the Bundaberg Multiplex on Wednesday 25 May competing in the Bundaberg Maths Teams Challenge. Students solved a range of problems in pairs and teams of five racing against the clock in some high-pressure situations. Our senior team consisting of Jayne, Maddison, Sam, Jordan and Hannah placed third in the senior division. Thank you to Mr Collyer and Mr Spanks who brought the students along, and also to the volunteers from our community who came along and supervised teams.
Mr Duncan, Head of Department Mathematics
Vicki Wilson Cup - Netball Report
Last Monday on the 30th of June, North High’s senior girls and boys netball teams competed in the Vicki Wilson Netball Cup. The competition was held at the Bundaberg Netball courts with schools from all over the Wide Bay region participating. The boys team unfortunately lost their first two games, going down to St Luke’s by only one point, and won their last game 12-7. The girls team went out strong winning their first of five games 21-10, and tied second game.
It was a great day enjoyed by all who attended, and was awesome to see North competing in such a large competition. Hopefully next year we can enter a junior team as well. Congratulations to both teams on their effort and performance.
Sports Captains, Jayne Wake and Ruby Rowlands

Aussie World
Our year 12 Tourism and Business classes didn’t let the rain dampen their enthusiasm at Aussie World last week. The day started with a very informative talk from management where we all learnt a lot about running a theme park from a tourism and business perspective. Then, there was FUN to be had on the rides!

Special screening
Regenerating Australia is a short film based on a four-month interview process with a diverse group of Australians who shared their hopes and dreams for the country's future. Set on New Year's Eve of December 2029, the film looks back at the decade 'that could be’; a decade that saw Australia transition to a fairer, cleaner, more community focused economy.
Commitments have been made across the international community to deliver on sustainability strategies – many of which are linked to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Both the Australian and Queensland Governments have pledged their support for reducing emissions and have long-term emissions reduction plans to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Council recognises the role that it too plays in creating a more sustainable society and environment, particularly the importance of encouraging others throughout the region to collectively work toward common goals. Part of this journey includes engaging our youth so that they understand the challenges that lie ahead, as well as the opportunities to achieve sustainable goals. In support of schools’ science and sustainability curricula, Bundaberg Regional Council invites students from your school to attend a special screening of Regenerating Australia.

Stymie - #saysomething

What does Stymie do for young people?
Of every 30 young people in Australia seven will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only two will reach out for support. Stymie works with you to give the young people you are working with, the power to say something or ask for help. We are an early intervention initiative that changes and saves lives.
Stymie empowers young people to ask for help when they need support, or if they are seeing or experiencing harm.
Stymie provides online reporting for schools. Encrypted, anonymous notifications are delivered within seconds to authorised recipients, who respond according to their wellbeing framework. The notification provides the option to include screenshots or images that validate the notification.
Being able to anonymously report, relieves feelings of helplessness for those who want to help their peers but don’t quite know how. Our purpose is to support you in creating an environment where harm can be minimised and effective action can be maximised.
Stymie can be used by anybody. It does not have to be a student at our school. The link to make a notification is on the school website front page
