From the Principal's office

It is hard to believe that the Term 2 has come to an end. There has been considerable student and staff absence this term due to COVID and I know this has produced challenges for students and staff to be able to complete curriculum work and assessment. I ask that parents continue to notify the school when students have tested positive to COVID. We are required to submit a weekly report to Regional office about the number of student and staff cases. If students are requiring an adjustment to their assessment schedule they should contact their teacher immediately to begin the process.
Shortly all parents, students and staff will be sent an email inviting their participation in the annual School Opinion Survey. The School Opinion Survey is distributed statewide in the first weeks of Term 3. Please take the time to complete the survey. Students in Year 8 and 11 will be participating this year.
Semester 1 Reports will be issued at the end of Week 1, Term 3. We will be conducting Progress Conferences on August 4th to give opportunity for parents and students to meet with individual teachers.
Next term we will also be holding our Year 11, 2023 Subject Selection evening and conducting individual SETP interviews for all Year 10 students and their parents. You will have received information about how to book an appointment to discuss future pathways. Every year 10 student and their parent will have the opportunity to meet for a 30 minute appointment. Students in Year 10 are also preparing to go on Work Experience at the end of Term 3. All Year 10s have the opportunity to participate and are encouraged to do so.
HOW TO BOOK YOUR YEAR 10 SETP INTERVIEW
We are currently taking enrolments for year 7, 2023. Our district primary schools have details and will have enrolment packs available at the end of this week. Enrolment packs can also be collected from our office at North. We will be holding and enrolment afternoon for parents to submit their enrolment forms on Tuesday 19 July. If you would like to complete an Intention to Enrol please use the link below. We would be most happy if you could share this information with friends and the school community.
INTENTION TO ENROL AT NORTH HIGH 2023
This week we finish the term with our Athletics carnival. On Thursday, we will be conducting some athletic events at school. On Friday the whole school will travel to the Bundaberg Athletics grounds by bus for the Athletics Carnival. The sporting houses have been in fierce competition this year and the Athletics competition will add to the Champion house points. Parental permission MUST be provided for students to attend Athletics Carnival and we thank you for providing your students' online consent at the link below. Good luck to all the teams.

School uniform
Please ensure that students are wearing correct uniform. We are very happy to help if you have any difficulty with the uniform. Thank you to the many students who are wearing the correct uniform and following the dress code – you are looking great and it creates a good impression.
Please contact your RAS coordinator if you have any concerns.
Finally, I would like to wish all families a safe and enjoyable holiday.

RECOGNISING POSITIVE STUDENT BEHAVIOUR
Reward Day is today, 22 June. Over 250 students qualified for the reward day. The focus of this reward is attendance. Following feedback from students, the final four options are:
- Laser Skirmish – with an inflatable course on the oval
- Face painting by local artist
- Escape Room – mystery / problem solving based activity
- $5 tuckshop voucher.
Please see the schedule below. Thank you for supporting your student/s to attend school each and every day. Term 2 Reward Day will be a great day for students.
Gotchas are the 'free and frequent' way we recognise positive student behaviour every day! Currently students can use their Gotchas for various rewards, including Zooper Doopers, hot chocolates and even a hot pie! Or they can just hand in their Gotchas to contribute to their RAS group. All Gotchas contribute to RAS House totals and students go in the draw for weekly tuckshop vouchers too. Please see the latest Gotcha tally. Well done to all RAS houses for your efforts this term. Remember, RAS totals reset at the start of each term.

YEAR 10 - SENIOR EDUCATION AND TRAINING (SET) PLANNING
Each Year 10 student is required to complete a SET (Senior Education and Training) interview and plan. The purpose of the SET interview and plan is to help students make good decisions about their learning pathways for Years 11 and 12, and ensure they base their subject choices on their abilities, interests and clearly articulated goals.
Year 10 students have been busy during their SETP lessons working towards completing their SET plan in term 3. This term they have completed career planning activities, viewed subject insight videos, and had visits from each Head of Department about subject offerings for Years 11 and 12. During SETP this week, Year 10 students completed initial subject selection survey that will provide valuable information for subject lines.
It is important for parents and carers to be part of the SET planning process, to support their student/s as they make decisions impacting their future. Parents and carers are invited to book a SET plan interview time between Monday 25 July to Monday 1 August. Please note that SET plan interviews are compulsory with bookings to be made on SOBS. Please refer to an email you received last week. If you have any difficulty using the online booking system, call our office for assistance on 4130 0222. If you have questions about the process or transition to Year 11, the Subject Selection Evening on Monday 18 July is the place to learn more. Please see the flyer included below.

Athletics Carnival 2022

The Bundaberg North SHS Athletics Carnival will be tomorrow, 23rd June and Friday, 24th June.
On Thursday, 23rd events will be held at school on the oval. Students registered to compete in the discus and javelin events will need a consent form complete by their parent/guardian. Students must keep the signed consent form with them to show to each event marshal. These forms can be picked up at A block office or L block staffroom.
On Friday, 24th June all students will travel by bus to the Bundaberg Athletics Grounds for the annual BNSHS Athletics Carnival. This is a great day of both competitive and social events and all students are required to attend. It is a whole school activity and there are no scheduled classes at school on that day. Students can dress in the theme of DISNEY MOVIES or can show support by wearing their House colours. The cost of the bus will be $2 which will be collected from students as they board the bus. Students should bring their lunch, water bottle, hats and sunscreen.
Parents, this is an important event on our school calendar and we thank you for supporting the school activity and encouraging your students to attend the Athletics Carnival. We ask you to complete the online consent form below. If you have difficulty completing the form, please contact the school office on 4130 0222.

Broncos visit North High
On Wednesday afternoon, Bundaberg North State High School had the privilege of hosting three Brisbane Broncos legends and now game development officers, Michael Handcock, David Stagg and Casey Maguire. This was a great reward for our students that committed to North High Rugby League. Our students thoroughly enjoyed participating in some skills drills with Casey and listening to a motivational talk by Michael and David about the students working hard to be the best version of themselves every day. The boys left our students with a great final message, “Hard work always beats talent, when talent fails to work hard.”
Thanks again to the Brisbane Broncos for providing our students with this opportunity and thank you to the students who committed to North High Rugby League this term and played with pride and effort.
Mr Moore, Teacher

Early Childhood 'Under 8s day'
The year 11 & 12 Early Childhood classes attended the Under 8's Morning at Bundaberg North State School and ran several literacy and creative based activities for the students and guests. They received some fantastic feedback and gained valuable experience working with children.

The finished product
Technologies students finished their term projects this week and had some amazing pieces to share with their families. Well done to those students whose handiwork now has a place in their homes.

Bundaberg Head of the River
Over the last few weeks, the Bundaberg all schools regatta series was held at Bucca. The first of the three regattas unfortunately was cancelled due to bad weather. The North High team achieved excellent results throughout the day at the second regatta with Sarah taking out the grade 9 single and double scull races, and Richard placing second in the school boys open single scull.
The Bundaberg Head Of the River was held on Sunday the 12th of June. In spite of the extremely cold wind and rough conditions our team managed some great results. Sarah again won both her double and single events. Jayne won the open girls single scull taking home the Frank Axom Trophy as well as the open girls double with doubles partner Sarah rowing up from grade 9, and Richard achieving a place in his final.
Despite the miserable weather on the day it was great to see North High up on the podium amongst St Luke’s and Shalom, achieving five gold medals overall and trophy.

World Sea Turtle Day
Thursday 16th June was World Sea Turtle Day. The Planeteers organised a webinar with Lauren, a turtle ranger from Mon Repos, to learn more about threats to sea turtles and how we can help reduce these threats.
The top three threats to our local sea turtles are: fishing (trawlers and long lines), lights, and plastics. To help reduce these threats we can:
- reduce consumption of seafood, especially seafood that is caught using methods likely to trap or drown sea turtles;
- keep lights off and curtains/blinds closed at night during the nesting season;
- buy products that have less or no plastic like bamboo toothbrushes, peanut butter in glass jars, large packets of chips instead of multiple small packets of chips, bars of soap packed in cardboard instead of plastic pump bottles, etc.
We would like to thank Lauren for her time. Students who attended this session have a better understanding of what they can do to help our local sea turtles, as well as what Lauren does in her role as a ranger.
Mrs Roberts, Planeteers Coordinator

Stymie - #saysomething

What does Stymie do for young people?
Of every 30 young people in Australia seven will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only two will reach out for support. Stymie works with you to give the young people you are working with, the power to say something or ask for help. We are an early intervention initiative that changes and saves lives.
Stymie empowers young people to ask for help when they need support, or if they are seeing or experiencing harm.
Stymie provides online reporting for schools. Encrypted, anonymous notifications are delivered within seconds to authorised recipients, who respond according to their wellbeing framework. The notification provides the option to include screenshots or images that validate the notification.
Being able to anonymously report, relieves feelings of helplessness for those who want to help their peers but don’t quite know how. Our purpose is to support you in creating an environment where harm can be minimised and effective action can be maximised.
Stymie can be used by anybody. It does not have to be a student at our school. The link to make a notification is on the school website front page

This invitation has also been extended to eligible SUN students (ie Year 12 and completed a SUN unit previously) and their nominated parent/guardian.
WHEN: Wednesday 15th June 2022 at 3.30pm (AEST)
You will be provided with a Zoom link to the online session after registration.
What if yourself or your students can't attend?
Don't worry - we understand that this time might not suit everyone. The session will be recorded for viewing at a later date. We will send out the link to the recording via email.
