BNSHS Newsletter 20th July 2022
From the Principal's office

Welcome to Term 3. I hope that your children enjoyed their holiday break and are ready to begin Semester 2.
Semester 1 reports have been finalised and were emailed to all families last Friday. Reports cards can also be accessed via QParents and students can also find their report card through One School. If you have any concerns about accessing your child’s report please do not hesitate to contact us for assistance.
Each year Queensland state schools participate in a School Opinion Survey. All parents last week should have received an email invitation to complete the School Opinion Survey online. Could you please take the time to complete the survey. The results assist us with future planning. Students in Year 8 and 11 will also be participating in the survey and should also have received an email. Students will be given class time to complete their survey and should ensure they bring their laptop/device to be able to do so.
Many students bring and use their laptop each day. They connect to our school network and use their laptop regularly in class. There is still a number of students however, who do not bring their device to school or do not have a laptop. This makes lesson delivery difficult as students require the use of the internet or their device to complete tasks. Please encourage your child to bring their laptop each day. If you have having any difficulty in supplying a laptop please contact me as we may be able to assist. Thanks to the generosity of Queensland Computers Bundaberg, we have had a small number of laptops donated to the school that can be used for students in need. Also, this semester we will be investigating the use of technology in the school and working on a plan to increase access to technology for students.
At this time of the year, our Year 10 students are involved in creating their Senior Education Plans (SETP) and selecting subjects for 2023. Our Annual Subject Selection Evening was held on Monday July 18 and I thank the students and parents who attended. This is an informative evening where students and their parents can discuss future pathways. All Year 10 students and their parents then take part in SETP interviews starting on July 25. If you have not yet made your appointment, please follow the link to secure your booking.
This week also, we held our 2023 Year 7 enrolment afternoon to welcome our new year 7s. All students who intend to enrol at North in 2023 are required to complete enrolment forms and attend an interview. If you have a child intending to enrol and who missed the afternoon, please contact the office so that an interview and paperwork can be completed.
Last week we had 5 Year 11 students compete in a 3 day ECOMAN competitions. Congratulations to those who participated and came second.
Finally, I would like to congratulate all the students who participated in the Athletics Carnival on the last day of term. It was a great day to end the term and see many students enjoying themselves and participating in the variety of events. Well done to all involved.

WHERE TO GO FOR HELP
At times students can feel angry, upset or alone. Students may be unsure of who or where to go for help. Following a thoughtful discussion with a year 8 student, it was decided we needed to check that all students know how they can access assistance.
There are many people who can support students at school. To make sure students know where they can go for assistance, the document below was prepared and shared with all students. As parents and carers, it is important to check in with your student, make them aware of the support available and encourage them to seek assistance. Remember, we rely on you, parents and carers, to let us know when you learn information about your student. We need to work together to support students to have positive experiences at school.

RECOGNISING POSITIVE STUDENT BEHAVIOUR
Reward Day was Wednesday 22 June. It was wonderful to see so many students enjoying ‘rewards’ for excellent attendance. Over 250 students qualified for the reward day. Please view some of the amazing photos from the day. Thank you to students for demonstrating school values throughout the day as they participated in one of the following: laser skirmish, face painting or ‘escape room’ activity. Students who chose a tuckshop voucher received them during week 10 of term 2. The next reward day will be held in week 10, with new rewards on offer!
Blue Gotchas are here! The latest Gotcha colour is blue. Gotchas are the free and frequent way we recognise positive student behaviour every day! Students receive Gotchas for demonstrating the school values of respect, responsibility and safety. There are many students collecting Gotchas to hand in for rewards. Last week I was speaking with a student who had over 700 Gotchas!
Next week is HOT PIE WEEK! Students can ‘cash in’ 100 Gotchas for a hot pie voucher. Then they hand this voucher in to Jacky at the tuckshop, to order their HOT PIE for next week. Yum!

YEAR 10 – SET PLANNING IS NEXT WEEK
Thank you to the students, parents and carers who attended the Subject Selection Evening on Monday night. It was an informative and interactive event with many school, industry and educational provider displays. Students also received the ‘pathways’ document and their subject selection lines. These documents will form the basis of a student’s SET Plan interview.
SET plan interviews will be held between Monday 25 July to Monday 1 August. Please note that SET plan interviews are compulsory with bookings to be made on SOBS. Please use the link below to book. If you have any difficulty using the online booking system, call our office for assistance on 4130 0222. It is important for parents and carers to be part of the SET planning process, to support their student/s as they make decisions impacting their future.

Year 10 Work Experience 2022
Year 10 compulsory work experience will commence on 12th September to 16th September 2022 last week of 3rd term.
Work Experience enables students to explore an idea of a career they’re interested in. Employers who host work experience students have the opportunity to inspire young people about their industry and the education and training pathways available.
Work experience helps students to
- Test their chosen career choice.
- Engage with the wider community.
- Practice course work in a relevant setting.
- Learn about what is required from a worker in the workplace.
- Build general work skills like good communication, team work, critical thinking.
- Gain confidence, maturity, and self- management skills through participation in an adult work environment.
- Make informed decisions when planning their transition from school and to further education, training, and work.
- Demonstrate reliability, motivation, work ethics and good personal presentation.
Students will need to locate their own placement with the support from the school and parents and carers. These placements will then need to be approved by the school and appropriate paperwork to be provided to employer.
Some of our local businesses are very popular and students will need to book their work experience dates well in advance
Students within their SET P class will be guided on how to approach a business for their placement.
If any student needs assistance to find a placement they can come and see Mrs Prince (G Block) or email aprin52@eq.edu.au or SETP Teacher.

Stymie - #saysomething

What does Stymie do for young people?
Of every 30 young people in Australia seven will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only two will reach out for support. Stymie works with you to give the young people you are working with, the power to say something or ask for help. We are an early intervention initiative that changes and saves lives.
Stymie empowers young people to ask for help when they need support, or if they are seeing or experiencing harm.
Stymie provides online reporting for schools. Encrypted, anonymous notifications are delivered within seconds to authorised recipients, who respond according to their wellbeing framework. The notification provides the option to include screenshots or images that validate the notification.
Being able to anonymously report, relieves feelings of helplessness for those who want to help their peers but don’t quite know how. Our purpose is to support you in creating an environment where harm can be minimised and effective action can be maximised.
Stymie can be used by anybody. It does not have to be a student at our school. The link to make a notification is on the school website front page
