BNSHS Newsletter 12/10/2022
From the Principal's office

Welcome to the final term of the year. This week we celebrated the great achievements of our students at our Presentation Parade and Presentation Night on Thursday 13th October at 7pm in our school hall. I want to congratulate all the students who received awards.
Term 3 reports were extremely pleasing with some excellent results and improvement shown in a number of subject areas including Maths across year 7-10. Our A-C results in Year 7 Maths improved from 75% to 92%, Year 8 from 68% to 74% and Year 9 from 56% to 83%. English continued to improve and we saw some excellent results in some Economics and Business, Arts, HPE and Technologies classes. Well done to all students who have worked on improving their results.
As part of our continual improvement to our facilities we have this year: installed an athletics long jump pit that will soon be completed; we are purchasing 2 large fans for the Assembly Hall; renewed the Art room flooring; and painted a number of classrooms.
Earlier this year, our school experienced a number of break ins and incidents involving vandalism. Since then we have installed a new security system and have plans for the installation of CCTV cameras over the summer vacation to improve student safety and security. Further information about the CCTV installation can be found below.
Finally, I would like to thank the P&C who are organising a bus trip to the Sunshine Coast as a fundraising event on Saturday October 22. The P&C are a dedicated group working together to raise money for the school. Please consider joining in on the fun and attend the bus trip to the Eumundi Markets. See the flyer below for details. It should be a great day out.

CCTV School Information
At Bundaberg North State High school, we are committed to creating and maintaining safe and secure learning environments that support the provision of high-quality education for teaching and learning.
Schools face a number of security related threats and must develop and implement appropriate strategies to manage these risks. Closed circuit television (CCTV) can be an effective tool to help a school to meet its obligation to provide a safe and secure environment for students and staff, and meet its duty of care obligations.
The installation of CCTV at our school is intended as a strategy to mitigate and manage security risks. It is not intended to replace traditional methods of student supervision, or as a method of workplace surveillance.
The location of the cameras will ensure there is coverage of access areas to and from the school, and within the school grounds to enable identification of unauthorised access and activity.
Management, use and disclosure of CCTV footage
The security of the footage captured will be managed in accordance with the relevant Privacy Laws and Legislation.
A school can disclose personal information to relevant Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA), including the Queensland Police Service (QPS), if the personal information is considered ‘reasonably necessary’ for a law enforcement activity. This includes personal information contained in the security footage.
If CCTV footage contains evidence relied upon in a decision to suspend or exclude a student, it must be retained for the same period of time the suspension/exclusion documents are required to be retained. This is because the footage relied upon will form part of the decision to suspend or exclude the student. Similarly, if CCTV camera footage is used to capture a workplace accident or personal injury giving rise to a personal injury or WorkCover claim
If further information is required, please feel free to contact the school.

VAPING
Vaping has become a serious issue in today’s society and we have had instances of students vaping at school. Many believe it is a good substitute for smoking but this is not true. Doctor Karl Kruszelnicki has created a series of eight short 10 – 15 second myth-busting videos to inform us about vaping. The eight videos include:
- Secret ingredients
- Cloudy with a Chance of Cancer
- Toxic Traits
- A Respiratory Story
- Puffery
- Vaping Bows
- Huffing and Puffing
- Up in Smoke.
Click on the link below to access the videos.
At school we have several staff who can support students if they want to learn more about the impacts of vaping or want support to stop vaping. Students or parents can contact the school nurse Ms Robyn Kirby, school GP Dr Bailey or one of our Guidance Officers, Ms Helen Coulton or Ms Lisa Alexander. Parents and carers can call 4130 0222 to make an appointment.

Well done Izzy!

ZONTA provides assistance
On 10th September, the ZONTA Club of Bundaberg hosted a Birthing Kit Assembly in our North High hall. The project was a huge success, creating clean birth kits for women in remote regions of developing countries with materials provided by Birthing Kit Foundation Australia. Year 12 students Chanise, Declan, Ebony, Hannah and Jackson participated in the day alongside friends, family members and other volunteers to create 198 birthing kits. The ZONTA Club hopes to continue the project as an annual tradition and thanks the assistance of our North High students and facilities to make the day possible.

Stymie - #saysomething

What does Stymie do for young people?
Of every 30 young people in Australia seven will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only two will reach out for support. Stymie works with you to give the young people you are working with, the power to say something or ask for help. We are an early intervention initiative that changes and saves lives.
Stymie empowers young people to ask for help when they need support, or if they are seeing or experiencing harm.
Stymie provides online reporting for schools. Encrypted, anonymous notifications are delivered within seconds to authorised recipients, who respond according to their wellbeing framework. The notification provides the option to include screenshots or images that validate the notification.
Being able to anonymously report, relieves feelings of helplessness for those who want to help their peers but don’t quite know how. Our purpose is to support you in creating an environment where harm can be minimised and effective action can be maximised.
Stymie can be used by anybody. It does not have to be a student at our school. The link to make a notification is on the school website front page
