From the Principal's Office

Dear Parents,
We are excited to have launched our Resilient Schools Programme run by 'Bullyproof Australia' and endorsed by Jeff Horn (world champion boxer). We were fortunate to have Jeff Horn visit our school on Friday May 5along with the CEO of Bullyproof Australia Frank Mechler. Our P&C President Mrs Shelly Hansen brought the idea to introduce this programme into our school after attending the P&C Queensland conference where the programme was being promoted. The programme focuses on developing resilience and conflict resolution in students, and we believe it will be a valuable addition to our school curriculum. We believe that this programme will help equip students with the tools they need when faced with conflict. The 10 lesson programme will be delivered by our staff during our RAS classes once a fortnight. We look forward to beginning the first lesson in week 5.
I would like to thank all the parents who attended the Student Progress Conferences on Thursday April 27th. Your participation and engagement are greatly appreciated, and we believe that working together will help your child achieve their full potential.
I would like to congratulate our students for their participation in various extracurricular activities. Firstly, we want to thank our year 7 students for their participation in the Year 7 camp. We hope that the experience was a positive and memorable one for them, and we believe that such events help students build their confidence, independence and resilience. Thank you to the 7 members of staff who organised and attended the camp. Please see the camp video later in the newsletter.
Secondly, I want to congratulate our Year 11 and 12 students who participated in the CQU Business competition. It was a great to see 2 teams compete against the district schools.
Thirdly, following our school Cross Country competition on April 26th, a team of students from all year levels travelled to Gin Gin for the Bundaberg District Cross Country competition last week. Thank you to Miss Hearn for organising the team. Well done to all the students who competed. Three students were selected to go to the Wide Bay competition. Well done Zara, Angus and Elliott.
As we progress through term 2, I would like to remind you to continue supporting your child's learning journey. Encourage them to stay focused and engaged in their studies, and be an active participant in their learning. We are always here to support and guide them, and we encourage you to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you again for your continued support and partnership in helping your child succeed. We look forward to another productive term ahead.
Best regards, Robyn Kent

Endeavour Mother’s Day support
Last week and this week the FlexiSpace students spent time at the Endeavour flower farm to support their Mother’s Day project. Part of the FlexiSpace ethos is community engagement. On Friday 5 May, the year 11 and 12 QCIA class travelled to the farm and on Monday 8 May the year 10 FlexiSpace class went to the farm. It was a great experience to learn about the project and how it supports people with disabilities. Students striped the flowers, cut them to size and placed them in buckets ready for bunching. Some students also learnt how to bunch the flowers ready for sale. It was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours in a relaxing and positive atmosphere.

North Rewards
Students have been receiving Gotchas for demonstrating Respect, Responsibility and Safety. This term we have new orange Gotchas and new prizes for students to ‘cash in’ their Gotchas.
Current prizes/vouchers available:
- Zooper Dooper = 10 Gotchas
- Ice Cream Voucher = 50 Gotchas
- Slushie = 100 Gotchas
- Sausage roll = 200 Gotchas
Students are being surveyed during RAS next week to get more ideas of the prizes and vouchers they would like when cashing in Gotchas. If you or your child have any ideas, I am happy for you to email them to me at rwats34@eq.edu.au

Upcoming Reward Day 16th June
Reward Day for term 2 will be held at the end of week 9, due to the Inter-house athletics carnival. To qualify for Reward Day students must achieve 95% actual attendance between start of week 9 (term 1) and end of week 7 (term 2), with no unexplained absences and no suspensions. Students’ individual circumstances will be considered if you contact me to explain further information. Students can choose one of the following:
- Bundy Bowl ($5 co-payment required)
- Pizza Party (at school)
- $5 tuckshop voucher.

Year 7 camp
Last Wednesday morning, 95 year 7 students headed off on the adventure of a lifetime to Garapine.
Over the three days, students were encouraged to step outside of their comfort zones and try new things. During the camp students experienced canoeing, raft building, archery, crate climbing, building billy carts, initiatives and bush skills where students were given minimal materials and had to construct a shelter and then learnt how to light a fire. A huge congratulations to all students for embracing new challenges. We experienced amazing growth over the three days of camp.
A huge thank you to Miss Grogan, Miss Knight, Mrs Foskett, Mrs Cronin, Mr Moore and Mr Ross for your time and commitment in ensuring everyone had a great time and returned home safely.
Mrs Thornton, Head of Junior School
Composting Awareness Week
This week is composting awareness week. Composting food and garden waste is a great way to reduce what goes into landfill and creates a high nutrient, organic fertiliser, which is great for the garden. Last year, the North High Planeteers purchased two compost bins for the school to use for food scraps from cooking classes and the tuckshop, as well as garden waste from our grounds. On Thursday at first break, Planeteers will be collecting food scraps from students to put in our school compost bins. Consider starting a compost bin at home.
Mrs Roberts, Planeteers Coordinator

Yr 11 Biology - Term 1 - Cells
Students in Biology have bee learning about how the basic units of life – cells – function. In this practical activity, students used an egg to represent a cell and investigated how substances move into and out of the cell. This caused the egg to shrink and swell. Students also investigated how glucose is moved across a membrane testing for its presence with a Benedict’s test – heating a substance.
Mr Smith, Science Teacher

Math
Math with Mr Spanks uses Pedagogical approaches for teaching factorising and expanding in year 10 core mathematics.
Teaching factorising and expanding, it's important to start with a clear explanation of the concepts and their applications. This can be done through visual aids, real-world examples, and hands-on activities that help students understand the relevance and usefulness of algebra.
Scaffolded practice. When introducing a new concept or skill, it's important to provide students with opportunities to practice in a structured and guided way. This can involve providing step-by-step instructions, worked examples, and gradual release of responsibility as students build confidence and independence.
Differentiation. In a classroom with diverse learning needs, it's important to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students. This can involve providing different levels of support, using multiple modalities, and offering extension activities for advanced learners.
Collaborative learning. Working in groups can be a powerful way to engage students in the learning process and promote deeper understanding. This can involve group problem-solving, peer tutoring, and cooperative learning activities that encourage students to work together and learn from each other.
It's important to use formative assessment strategies such as matching pairs. This has helped Mr Spanks to identify areas of strength and weakness, provide feedback to students, and adjust instruction to meet individual needs.

Maths Team Challenge
The Mathematics Team Challenge is almost here!
I am excited to announce that our school will be participating in a Math Team Challenge Bundaberg Multiplex Centre on the 31st of May! This is a great opportunity for our school to showcase our skills and compete against other talented math teams.
The Math Team Challenge is a competition that tests our ability to solve challenging math problems under time pressure. Our 6 teams will be working to solve a variety of problems that will challenge our critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The problems will range in difficulty and cover a wide range of mathematical topics, so it is important that we are prepared and ready to take on anything that comes our way.
To ensure that we are fully prepared for the Math Team Challenge, team members have been given access to sample questions and answers on a OneNote page developed by Mr Spanks. Regular practice of questions leading up to the competition is recommended. Students can work on problems from past competitions and review important mathematical concepts that you will need to know for the challenge.
It is important that all team members access these practice questions and come prepared to the challenge to work collaboratively with their fellow teammates. By working together and sharing our knowledge and strategies, we can improve our problem-solving skills and increase our chances of success in the competition.
For each team entered in the competition, the school must provider a supervisor who will sit at the table of a team from another school to mark their responses against an answer sheet and ensure no cheating occurs. If you are able to volunteer as a supervisor of a team for this event, please contact Ms Carpenter on 07 4130 0225 or ccarp6@eq.edu.au
I am confident that our school teams’ have what it takes to excel in the Math Team Challenge on the 31st of May!
Carolin Carpenter, Head of Department Mathematics
Izzy strikes again
Following her recent success, Yr 9 student Izzy had another smashing weekend at WideBay Titles in Childers recently. She came away with Gold in Brown Belt Kata, Bronze for Ju-Ippon Kumite and Silver in the Team Katas.

Calling all equestrian enthusiasts.

Bundaberg North State High School is looking to build our equestrian team up! Any student that has their own horse/access to a horse (the school does not provide horses) is welcome. You may not need your own float as other team members might have a free space.
There are two competitions this year held in Maryborough that cater for all levels, including beginners, and most disciplines, English and Western events. I am sure that all riders who attend will thoroughly enjoy the event. The first competition is held on June 22nd and 23rd and nominations are open. The second event will be towards the end of August with details to come.
If your student would like to become part of our team, please have them come and collect information and permission forms from Miss Wilson in O Block or L Block staffrooms, or email at alwil3@eq.edu.au.
Miss Wilson, Teacher
Live and Deadly

Certificate II in Hospitality
Our Certificate II Hospitality students have been busy completing two units of competency with our Registered Training Provider, Blue Print this week.
Students engaged in exercises and role plays related to serving and handling patrons in licensed venues and the legislation surrounding this. The unit looked at how licensees and staff promote and support safer environments when selling, serving, or promoting alcoholic beverages in a professional and responsible manner.
On completion of this unit, students gained their Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Certificate which allows them to gain employment in licensed hospitality establishments.
Responsible Service of Alcohol topics included:
- Follow the principles of Responsible Service of Alcohol
- Assist customers to drink within appropriate limits
- Assess alcohol affected customers and identify those to whom sale or service must be refused
- Refuse to provide alcohol

Students also completed their Provide Responsible Gambling Services certification. The Queensland responsible gambling Code of Practice provides a proactive whole-of-industry approach to the promotion of responsible gambling practices. It also encourages the continuation of best practice for gambling environments that minimise harm to individuals, their families and to the broader community in general.
Information covered included:
- Follow responsible gambling practices - legislation
- Provide information and assistance to customers about problem gambling
It was wonderful to see students fully engaged in these units of work and acquire valuable skills and nationally recognised qualifications to assist them in gaining employment within licensed hospitality venues.
Mrs Austin, Hospitality Teacher

2023 Cross Country
The 2023 Cross Country was held on Tuesday 24th April. Around 70 students battled either the 3km, 4km or 6km circuit. The open course provided a great spectacle as the runners made their way through diverse terrain around the school and neighbouring fields. With house pride on the line, many athletes pushed themselves to the limit in order to complete their race, while others took the more social approach, but still gained valuable house points.
As a stepping stone to the District Cross Country, many competitors returned to the course with some retaining their age champion medal, Paige, Bridie, Cassidy, Skyla and Angus. The race also threw up a few surprise results for age-champions. Well done to all age champs!
The 2023 House points were very close, emphasising how much ‘team spirit’ and ‘having a go’ can really make a difference! CONGRATULATIONS to MONDURAN House who were triumphant on the day.

Swimming carnival results
On the 28th of March Bundaberg North High inter-house swimming carnival was held at Norville pool. This year’s theme was Hawaiian, though most students dressed in their house colours. Our House and Sport Captains along with some teachers arrived early at the pool to set up tents and house flags in preparation for the students to arrive. The 2023 swimming carnival had changed from last year, this year we only took students who had nominated to swim, along with year 12 students. Over 120 students nominated to compete in events such as freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly. Shoutout to all competitors who participated in races to raise their house scores, while also supporting their teams.
Congratulations to all age champions!

Qld Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
On Tuesday 9th May, all year 7 and 9 students participated in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey. At Bundaberg North State High School, we understand that life at school is about more than just learning.
We know student wellbeing and engagement are important, both at school and in life beyond the classroom.
The Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey is a new tool designed to measure how Queensland students view their wellbeing and engagement at school. It measures many aspects of students’ wellbeing, engagement and experience at school, like school climate, sense of belonging, resilience, general life satisfaction, and relationships.
The survey is completely confidential and will provide the school with invaluable data on how to ensure all students feel safe and welcomed while at school. Please direct any questions regarding routes or bus times to Stewart and Sons.

Stymie - #saysomething

What does Stymie do for young people?
Of every 30 young people in Australia seven will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only two will reach out for support. Stymie works with you to give the young people you are working with, the power to say something or ask for help. We are an early intervention initiative that changes and saves lives.
Stymie empowers young people to ask for help when they need support, or if they are seeing or experiencing harm.
Stymie provides online reporting for schools. Encrypted, anonymous notifications are delivered within seconds to authorised recipients, who respond according to their wellbeing framework. The notification provides the option to include screenshots or images that validate the notification.
Being able to anonymously report, relieves feelings of helplessness for those who want to help their peers but don’t quite know how. Our purpose is to support you in creating an environment where harm can be minimised and effective action can be maximised.
Stymie can be used by anybody. It does not have to be a student at our school. The link to make a notification is on the school website front page
