From the Principal's Office

Dear Parents,
As we enter Term 3, we are excited to share some important updates and upcoming events that will be on offer to our school community.
Semester 1 reports for your child/children were issued on Friday 14th July. These reports provide valuable insights into your child's progress, highlighting their achievement and areas for further growth. We encourage you to take the time to review the reports with your child, celebrating their accomplishments and discussing strategies to enhance their learning experience.
We believe in fostering strong partnerships between parents and teachers to ensure the best possible education for our students. To facilitate open communication and collaboration, we would like to invite you to our upcoming Student Progress Conferences which will be held on August 3 in or school hall. This will be an excellent opportunity to meet with your child's teachers, discuss their progress, and gain valuable insights into their individual learning journeys. We encourage you to mark this date on your calendar and look forward to your active participation. Interview requests can be done online and the link will be available very soon for you to book.
The well-being of our students is of utmost importance to us. As part of our commitment to providing holistic support, we are in the process of applying for further funding for the Chaplaincy Program in 2024. This program has been instrumental in providing support to our students, ensuring they have access to a supportive and nurturing environment and contributes to the well-being of our school community. If you have any queries about this program please feel free to contact the school.
During the last week of term 2 we held the Annual Athletics carnival. Congratulations to all the students who participated in the competition. Results will be issued at our school parade.
Our dedicated Parents and Citizens (P&C) association plays a vital role in enhancing the school experience for our students. We would like to inform you that the P&C is organizing a Centsale on August 26 at the Spotted Dog from 11.30 am for a 1pm start. We encourage you to bring along your family and friends to support this fundraising event, as the proceeds will go toward enriching educational resources and extracurricular activities for our students. Please see the flyer below.
We are thrilled to announce that on July 25, our school will welcome 20 students from Japan for a two-week visit. This cultural exchange program provides a unique opportunity for our students to learn about Japanese culture, foster international friendships, and develop a global perspective. We encourage all students to extend a warm welcome to our guests, engage in meaningful cultural exchanges, and embrace the diversity that this experience brings. Thank you to the families who are hosting the students. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Term 3 will hold provide many opportunities for our students and the wider school community. We encourage students to get involved in a range of activities to enrich their school experience.
Should you have any questions or require further information regarding any of the mentioned events or initiatives, please do not hesitate to contact the school administration. We look forward to your active involvement and a successful Term 3.
Warm regards,
Robyn Kent, Principal

Senior Update

We would like to extend our thanks to all the parents and students who attended the Subject Selection Evening on Monday. Your active participation and enthusiasm made the event a resounding success. We appreciate your dedication towards your child's education and your commitment to shaping their academic journey.
The next step for our year 10’s is the Setp Interview, where both students and parents will have the opportunity to meet with staff and finalise the subject selection process. Every student will have a SETP interview and we strongly encourage all parents to be present to support this process. Please see the link below to book your appointment, or contact the school office if you need help.
For any Year 11 students who wish to make changes to their subject selection, we kindly remind you to submit your Subject Change Forms as soon as possible. It is essential to finalize these changes promptly to ensure a smooth transition into the new subjects.
To our dedicated Year 12 students, we applaud your hard work and determination towards achieving your Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). With the finish line fast approaching, we encourage you to maintain your focus and dedication. Your efforts will undoubtedly yield great results, and we have every confidence in your ability to succeed.

STUDENT NOMINATIONS FOR PRESENTATION CEREMONIES
Presentation ceremonies will be held on Tuesday 10 October. At Bundaberg North SHS we have a Presentation morning and evening event. An Award Committee has been formed to consider students’ achievements and involvement in extra-curricular activities. There are many awards across year 7 to 12. Some of these awards are determined by academic results, others consider representation of the school or extra-curricular activities. For this reason, students are asked to nominate for awards, so the Award Committee has as much information as possible before making decisions. Now is the time for students to nominate for the following awards:
- Year 12 Major Awards
- Sport Awards including: Green and Gold, Maroon Award, Full Colour, Half Colour, Wide Bay Certificate, Sporting Certificate
- Service and Cultural Awards including: Green and Gold, Maroon Award, Full Colour, Half Colour, Wide Bay Certificate, Service or Cultural Certificate.

CELEBRATION LUNCH
As part of North Rewards, we recognise the excellent of students. To attend Reward Days, students must achieve 95% attendance. To recognise the outstanding effort of a small number of students who have achieved 100% for semester 1, they will be invited to a Celebration Luncheon, at the L Block dining room on Friday 11 August. These students will receive the following invitation.

Queensland Day Award for our P&C President
Our warmest congratulations go to Mrs Shelly Hansen who was recently awarded the 'Individual Community Service Award' at the 2023 Queensland Day Awards.
Shelly has been our valued P&C President for almost 8 years but in total has served on local P&C associations for 17 years. There are many other organisations who have benefited from Shelly's generosity of time including P&Cs Queensland, PCYC and the Bundaberg 4WD club. Along with Bundaberg North State High School, Football Bundaberg, Bundaberg Cricket Association also received financial grants due to Shelly's successful submissions.
It is great to see Shelly recognised for her dedication to the community and we are so fortunate to have her as our P&C President.

2023 Athletics Carnival
On Thursday, 22nd June the annual North High Athletics Carnival was held at the Bundaberg Athletics Grounds. Almost 400 students headed out to the grounds dressed in their cartoon best, or in their house colours ready for a day of competition and fun. It was a fabulous day and the sun shone as brightly as the North Spirit. Well done to all competitors.

Hooke's law
In the last two weeks of term 2, year 9s began learning about their term 3 topics in maths, linear and non-linear relations. The 9A Math class did an experiment to see if the length a spring stretched was directly proportional to the weights added to it. We discovered that it is a linear relationship up to a point, where the spring has reached its potential and the relationship becomes non-linear. This relationship is known as Hooke’s Law.

Cent Sale! P&C needs your support
The Bundaberg North SHS P&C are holding their annual cent sale fundraiser on 26th August. This event has been hugely successful in previous years so once again we will be holding the cent sale at the Railway Hotel/Spotted Dog Tavern on Saturday 26th August. The cent sale will start at 1pm but you are invited to arrive any time after 11:30am. To book a table, call the school office on 4130 0222.
If you have any non-perishable goods, pantry items or bric-a-brac you would like to donate, these can be dropped off at the school office. All donations are very gratefully received.

Plastic free July
It’s Plastic-Free July. To help students consider plastic alternatives, to reduce waste and energy use, the North High Planeteers will be making beeswax wraps at second break on Thursday (20th of July) in science room, E03. Beeswax wraps are a bio-degradable, reusable alternative to plastic wrap. Non-Planeteers who would like to make their own beeswax wrap can come along and join in for $3 to help cover the cost of the materials used. Planeteers will be selling the beeswax wraps they make in the coming weeks. Listen out in student notices for more information.

Stymie - #saysomething

What does Stymie do for young people?
Of every 30 young people in Australia seven will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only two will reach out for support. Stymie works with you to give the young people you are working with, the power to say something or ask for help. We are an early intervention initiative that changes and saves lives.
Stymie empowers young people to ask for help when they need support, or if they are seeing or experiencing harm.
Stymie provides online reporting for schools. Encrypted, anonymous notifications are delivered within seconds to authorised recipients, who respond according to their wellbeing framework. The notification provides the option to include screenshots or images that validate the notification.
Being able to anonymously report, relieves feelings of helplessness for those who want to help their peers but don’t quite know how. Our purpose is to support you in creating an environment where harm can be minimised and effective action can be maximised.
Stymie can be used by anybody. It does not have to be a student at our school. The link to make a notification is on the school website front page
Containers for Change program
Bundaberg North SHS supports the Containers for Change program and raises money for student resources. If you have empty bottles or cans and would like to donate them to North High we would be very grateful. You can either bring them to school office and staff will give them to the Tuckshop or you can take them to one of the recycling depots and quote our school code – C10002160.
Thank you for helping our school and the environment.
