From the Principal's office

Since the last newsletter, we conducted our Progress Conferences on Thursday, 6th August. I would like to thank the many parents and students who took the opportunity to meet with teachers about their child’s semester 1 progress. We had 250 interviews booked. If you did not attend an interview and would like to speak to any teachers about your son/daughter’s progress throughout the year you are always welcome to contact individual teachers.
Interschool sport has commenced. Well done to the students who have been representing North each week. Thank you to the parents for following the COVID safe plans and dropping off and collecting students from sporting venues promptly. Reminder that we are still not able to have spectators in grounds or venues.
Currently our Year 10 students are creating their Senior Education and Training Plan (SETP). We held our Subject Selection evening for all Year 10 students and parents on Monday, August 17th and the Year 11 subject offerings were released. Year 10 students are also taking part in a visit to CQ university and receiving career education in order to select a future pathway – tertiary, training or employment. All Year 10 students and their parents will be invited to an individual SETP interview in Week 9 or 10 of this term to discuss subject selections and pathways.
Our FlexiSpace building is progressing well and is due for completion in approximately 2 weeks. This new space will contain a refurbished classroom, 2 new small group spaces, a meeting room and an outdoor learning space. Our FlexiSpace program currently provides focussed support for a group of targeted year 8 students. When our facility is completed other classes and groups will have access to the new flexible learning spaces. This is an exciting project that is progressing at North.
As we continue to navigate the progress with COVID guidelines, remember if your child is unwell please keep them home. We are continuing to encourage students to wash their hands regularly and to use hand sanitiser. We will keep you informed of any changes to procedures.
Please keep safe and healthy.

10 Minute Parking Zones

At the front of the school on Marks Street there are eleven designated 10 minute parks available for drop off and pick ups. When using these parks please ensure that you keep to the 10 minute time limit. We have had some concerns that people are parking in the 10 minute zones for long periods of time, making it difficult for others to be able to find spaces for drop offs and pick ups. The 10 minute parks are clearly signposted for your convenience.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Year 10 Subject Selection night

Thank you to all the parents and students who attended our year 10 subject selection evening on Monday night. Attendees were treated to displays from all of the curriculum areas, showcasing the subject opportunities available at North High.
Important information on student pathways, the Queensland Certificate of Education, and the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank was also presented, along with the final version of the subject selection form. For those who were unable to attend, stay tuned to your emails for further updates.
Date claimer: SETP (Senior Education and Training Plan) meetings will be held from 11th to 18th September. This will be the official subject selection and pathways planning event for all year 10s. Stand by for booking details.

BYOxLink - Change for ALL students
Bundaberg North SHS's BYOD connection to the school network is changing to BYOxLink. Education Queensland has developed BYOxLink specifically for all Qld state schools.
This means that ALL students must change to the new BYOxLink prior to the cutover on Monday, 7th September to continue to connect to our school network. Students can onboard their device to the new BYOXLink prior to the cutover date, at their home or a public internet connection by using the help videos on student Sharepoint.

Recreation students coaching the next generation
This term the Year 12 Recreation students have been working hard developing their skills in our final coaching unit. They have been mastering all the finer skills of coaching from giving effective instructions, organising suitable activities to more advanced skills of adapting and modifying activities to provide a more engaging session. Students started practicing their coaching skills at school on their peers and now have taken on the challenge of coaching students at Bundaberg North State School. The students have been working in groups to coach a 1/2 class & a Yr 2 class in football based sports such as oztag, touch and football. It has been a pleasure to watch the Year 12s develop and improve their skills over the term and is always a laugh to hear the Year 12 students reflect and ask how us teachers do it.

Try a trade day
Seven of our Year 10 students participated in the CSQ’s (Construction Skills Queensland) Try a Trade event at TAFE Bundaberg campus last Thursday.
The day included hands-on experience with a number of trades (plumbing, brick laying, electrical and carpentry). Tradies from the various industries talked about career pathways and answered questions about construction and the opportunities it can offer. In addition, the students were put through the various processes that would happen out in industry. Many students walked away with an idea of what field of employment they would like to undertake after they graduated from school.

2020 Early school leavers survey
The Queensland Government is seeking the support of the school community for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2019, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.
Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.
Thank you for your support of Next Step post-school destination surveys in 2020.
For more information, visit the link below or telephone toll free on 1800 068 587.
CQUniversity

Throughout the last two weeks Central Queensland University (CQU) visited the year 12 cohort to inform the graduating class of 2020 of career opportunities after high school. These sessions included valuable knowledge on transition pathways, budgeting, scholarships and courses that will benefit the students in the coming years. The grade 12’s would like that thank all of the CQU Connect representatives who took their time to assist in educating them on the transition from high school into their future.

Address from an expert

Year 9 and Year 11 students were fortunate to hear from Hospitality industry expert Cr Tracey McPhee, owner of Alowishus Delicious. Cr McPhee spoke about the importance of employment for young people in the Bundaberg community. Interview skills, a professional resume and personal presentation are all important factors involved in the employment process, both in the hospitality industry and the broader workforce. Thank you to Cr Tracey McPhee and Amber Lutter from the Bundaberg Regional Council's Jobs Committment program, for visiting North High today!
