From the Principal's office

Following a number of challenging weeks at North High, the Spirit of North shone through last week with students and staff participating in a number of very positive activities. Our whole school Tug of War competition last Tuesday followed by the Spirit of North day held on Friday celebrated and showcased the many positives that exist at North High. Students were highly involved in a variety of activities across all year levels and demonstrating their commitment to our school values.
We are continuing to work with staff and resources from our North Coast Regional office and QPS to assist with addressing recent events and challenges we have faced to ensure we are doing everything we can to ensure the well-being of our students and all stakeholders of Bundaberg North High.
This week our year 10 students are attending work experience across many industries and areas of Bundaberg and district. We are looking forward to hearing of their experiences as they continue to plan their pathway for the future.
This week we have our interschool sporting finals day where a number of Touch football and Basketball teams will be competing. We also have rewards activities planned.
In our school hall, we are hosting the State finals of the CO2 dragsters on Wednesday and Thursday. Students from schools across Queensland have submitted designs for the competition. Thank you to Keith Holledge for bringing the competition to North.
Our Annual Presentation ceremonies will be held on October 10th – two ceremonies will be held to acknowledge the achievements of our students. We will have a morning ceremony and an evening ceremony. Shortly students will be notified if they have won an award. We would like to invite parents/carers to attend to share in the success of the students.
As this is our last newsletter before the September vacation, I wish you all students a safe and enjoyable holiday break.

REWARDS DAY – celebrating excellent attendance at North
Congratulations to the 230 students who qualified for Rewards Day. This week students have been using their tuckshop vouchers, enjoying their pizza and garlic bread or getting ready to attend the Rewards Day trip to Mon Repos this Friday. If your child has chosen the Mon Repos trip, please make sure you have completed the electronic form sent to you via email. If you have any questions, please call the office on 4130 0222. Just a reminder that students will not be swimming on Friday, but we will look through the centre, go for a walk, play on the beach and explore the rock pools! Students can either bring their lunch or buy some lunch at the Milbi Café, before returning to school at 1pm. Students must wear school uniform and have closed in shoes. Remember to be sun safe, with a hat and sunscreen too! Photos from our term 3 rewards will be shared in the next newsletter.

PRESENTATION NIGHT
The 2023 BNSHS Presentation Night is only a few weeks away! We have two ceremonies on Tuesday 10 October. One in the morning and one in the evening. Students and parents will be informed soon if they are receiving an award. Look out for the email. Looking forward to sharing the amazing sporting, cultural and academic achievements of students at North.

VAPING
Vaping has become a serious issue in today’s society and we have had instances of students vaping at school. Many believe it is a good substitute for smoking but this is not true. Doctor Karl Kruszelnicki has created a series of eight short 10 – 15 second myth-busting videos to inform us about vaping. The eight videos include:
- Secret ingredients
- Cloudy with a Chance of Cancer
- Toxic Traits
- A Respiratory Story
- Puffery
- Vaping Bows
- Huffing and Puffing
- Up in Smoke.
Click on the link below to access the videos.

At school we have several staff who can support students if they want to learn more about the impacts of vaping or want support to stop vaping. Students or parents can contact the school nurse Ms Robyn Kirby or one of our Guidance Officers, Ms Helen Coulton or Mr Ross. Parents and carers can call 4130 0222 to make an appointment.

Legal pathway talk
The senior legal studies students were lucky to have a fantastic guest speaker Christine Delaney, lawyer from Cranston McEachern Lawyers. Christine spoke to the students about pathways into the profession and the day-to-day life as a lawyer. The students will get to see lawyers in action next Thursday at the Brisbane Supreme Court.

Senior Art students produce stunning work
The art room, the heart of creativity and imagination, was again this week transformed with endless possibilities. Year 11 and 12 Certificate II Visual Art students pushed the boundaries with Botanical Transfer printing. These inspiring, thought provoking works are very impressive and it is a reminder of the young creativity and natural beauty in our lives.

Spirit of North Day
The true 'Spirit of North' was on display last Friday as students and staff celebrated the special day. Activities were planned for break times and included the student cafe with milkshakes and cookies, dancing in the hall, volleyball and a free dress day. The celebrations culminated in the COLOUR BLAST fun run which was a huge success and enjoyed by staff and students alike.

Basketball finals
Bundaberg North State High school had 2 teams that participated in the Basketball Finals day. Teams who competed throughout this terms sport program and placed in the top 4 came together to compete in a finals day carnival that determined the placing for the overall competition. Our Open Boys team played well throughout the competition and placed 4th overall. Our Girls team were invited to join in on finals day and showed true North spirit taking on the challenge of playing against teams who had the opportunity to play against each other throughout the term. Our girls team placed 4th overall. Special mention to our 7/8 Boys and 9/10 Boys team who both played well and were dedicated throughout the season but unfortunately did not qualify for finals day. Congratulations to all our basketball players and coaches on a great term of sport.

7/8 Boys Touch Football update

The Bundaberg North 7/8 boys touch football team have placed 3rd at the BDSSS winter finals day. The team played with passion and composure to lose to eventual winners Shalom College in the semi-final. Shalom beat BSHS in the Grand Final. The boys accepted the loss and went to record a strong victory against St Lukes in the playoff for 3rd. The play off result was 13-4. The 7/8 boys have had a strong commitment to training and have worked hard to improve throughout the season. It is this commitment to training that result in this strong result. Thanks to the Parents for getting players to games so reliably. A special thanks to Jesse Scott who bought all his experience as a representative touch player to assist in coaching the team to a very high standard. Well done boys.

It was a great evening for family, friends and the North High community. Congratulations to all involved in the production and thanks to all who attended in support of our students.

Bundaberg North State High School Community Education Counsellor, Kerryn Fisher, recently brought some of our First Nations students to the local event, Dorrie Day. Dorrie (Sticky Beak) Day promotes Careers and Training Opportunities in our region for all our First Nations People. What a fabulous event it was!

Farewell to Dr Bailey
This week we farewelled Dr Bailey who has been our GP in the pilot GPs in Schools program for 18 months. Dr Bailey has been a wonderful addition to the services provided at North. Stymie - #saysomething

What does Stymie do for young people?
Of every 30 young people in Australia seven will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only two will reach out for support. Stymie works with you to give the young people you are working with, the power to say something or ask for help. We are an early intervention initiative that changes and saves lives.
Stymie empowers young people to ask for help when they need support, or if they are seeing or experiencing harm.
Stymie provides online reporting for schools. Encrypted, anonymous notifications are delivered within seconds to authorised recipients, who respond according to their wellbeing framework. The notification provides the option to include screenshots or images that validate the notification.
Being able to anonymously report, relieves feelings of helplessness for those who want to help their peers but don’t quite know how. Our purpose is to support you in creating an environment where harm can be minimised and effective action can be maximised.
Stymie can be used by anybody. It does not have to be a student at our school. The link to make a notification is on the school website front page
Containers for Change program
Bundaberg North SHS supports the Containers for Change program and raises money for student resources. If you have empty bottles or cans and would like to donate them to North High we would be very grateful. You can either bring them to school office and staff will give them to the Tuckshop or you can take them to one of the recycling depots and quote our school code – C10002160.
Thank you for helping our school and the environment.
