From The Principal's Office

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope that you enjoyed the Easter vacation.
We are currently in full swing organising our North High 50th Anniversary celebrations on June 1st and are looking forward to welcoming back past students and staff on the day. Full details of the Anniversary celebrations are available on our school website. We are holding an open day at North High, 9 Marks Street from 10.00am – 3.00pm and then a ticketed event at the Brothers’ Club at 6.00pm in the evening. In order to spread the word could you please share the details with any past families, students or staff who attended North. We are looking forward to a great day of memories.
Students have now completed Term 1 assessment and progress reports have been issued to all students. We ask that you take the time to discuss your student’s report with them and invite you to make an appointment for a Student Progress Conference with individual teachers. At present, Student Progress Conferences are planned for May 2nd. We may have reason to change the date and will notify you of this change if necessary but we do encourage as many parents as possible to make appointments with the staff to check on progress.
Reach for the Sky and North Star Awards will be issued to students in the next few weeks to celebrate the achievements of students from Term 1. Congratulations to the students who meet the criteria for the awards. Students will be notified shortly if they are receiving an award.
Last week we held our annual Cross Country competition. It was excellent to see so many students across all age groups participating. Congratulations to the winners of each age group. A group of students will now go on to compete at the Bundaberg District Cross Country in Gin Gin this week. We wish them well.
Today we celebrated ANZAC day by having an ANZAC ceremony at school run by the Student Council. Students are invited to participated in the Bundaberg march and Moore Park march on April 25th and invite all students to join the school group marching.

Reach for the Sky Awards
Reach for the Sky awards will be presented in the coming weeks. These awards recognise students who consistently demonstrate excellent effort and behaviour across their subjects. Students can receive a BRONZE, SILVER or GOLD award based on the number of ‘excellent’ results for effort and behaviour. Each student must meet the minimum requirement for both effort and behaviour, for example, to receive a BRONZE award they must achieve at least 4 x Excellent results for effort and 4 x Excellent results for behaviour across their chosen subjects.
Criteria:
- GOLD: 6 x Excellent for Effort and Behaviour
- SILVER: 5 x Excellent for Effort and Behaviour
- BRONZE: 4 x Excellent for Effort and Behaviour
- PLATINUM: Achieve 3 x Reach for the Sky.
Students will be informed this week if they are receiving an award. Next week senior students will receive their award at the whole school parade and junior students will receive their award at a special junior parade in week 4. If you have any questions about these awards, please contact me via email rwats34@eq.edu.au or phone 4130 0222.
Livin’ Well Sessions
Next week on Wednesday 1 May, all students will attend a Livin’ Well presentation. Livin’ Well is a non-profit organisation that works to promote positive mental health and well-being for people through early education and awareness programs. The purpose of the session is the spread the message that it is okay to speak about mental health and how to get support for mental health.

Reward Day 1 coming soon
Well done to students who have achieved a Reach for the Sky award. The students with 90% actual attendance (with no unexplained absences or suspensions) will be invited to the first Reward Day on Wednesday 22 May. Students will be able to choose one of the following:
- Abseiling at Wyper Park
- Trip to Oaks Beach, Burnett Heads
- $5 Tuckshop voucher.
Students who have qualified will receive a survey to select their reward. Look out for more upcoming North Rewards’ events.

Senior Coaching
Over the first two weeks of the term, each year 11 and 12 student has met with a staff member to reflect on their current progress at school. In addition, we asked reflective questions to investigate the impact of factors within their control has on their ability to learn such as: sleep (they should be getting 8-10hr per night), part-time work and when and what they eat.
Unfortunately, we have found there are a significant number of students whose learning may be impacted by the following:
- Lack of sleep – going to bed too late to be able to get at least 8 hours sleep per night.
- Poor eating habits - not eating breakfast, this can be then compounded by not eating at school at all. This would greatly affect their ability to concentrate at school as well as make them feel tired as they are literally running out of fuel.
- Part-time jobs – working more than 12hours per week.
- Gaming late into the night or early morning.
We encourage parents to talk with your student about their coaching session and to ask to see the Track Ed profile to gain an insight into how your student is tracking. Perhaps parents could investigate if any of the impacting factors apply to their student and work with them to minimise the impact on their learning.
The staff involved have thoroughly enjoyed the process, getting to know our tremendous students a little better. It has been rewarding and refreshing to hear from the students about their future aspirations and current commitments. Most students would have left their coaching session with a list of tasks to complete. These could include trying to address one of the factors listed above, to implementing particular Study Habit/s from the Effective Study Habits booklet given to them (and emailed out by myself in week 1).

2024 Cross Country
The 2024 Cross Country was held on Tuesday 17th April. Around 70 students battled either the 3km, 4km or 6km circuit. The open course provided a great spectacle as the runners made their way through a variety of terrain around the school and neighbouring fields. With house pride on the line, many athletes pushed themselves to the limit in order to complete their race, while others took the more social approach, but still gained valuable house points.
As a stepping stone to the District Cross Country, many competitors returned to the course with some retaining their age champion medal, Zara, Paige, Bridie, Cassidy, and Elliott. The race also threw up a few surprise results for age-champions. Well done to all age champs!
The 2024 House points were very close, emphasising how much ‘team spirit’ and ‘having a go’ can really make a difference! CONGRATULATIONS to MONDURAN House who were triumphant on the day.

P&C ask for your uniform donations
My name is Shelly Hansen. I am the President of the BNSHS P&C Association and I am seeking your help. Sadly, there are students at our school whose families are not able to provide them with a uniform. I would like to ask for your assistance by donating any items of North High uniform that your children no longer need. The P&C try to support all requests for assistance but with your help we may be able to extend that support further.
All uniform donations are greatly appreciated, and we thank you for the continued support of our school.
Thank you for your help, Shelly Hansen, P&C President
Callout for volunteers
Can you volunteer some time either at home or in tuckshop?
We have some jobs for the tuckshop that could be completed at home such as cutting foil into squares, cutting burger paper (baking paper), putting labels on bags and more.
We also need assistance in our tuckshop. This can be a background position (not student facing). The jobs could include washing up, stocking fridges/ice cream freezer/spoons and helping with food preparation (cutting salads/fruit).
The main days needed are Tuesday and Thursday from 8am-12noon, but any amount of time from 1 to 4 hours would be extremely helpful.
We can also sign off on your Centrelink, work/volunteer forms.
If you think you could spare some time, please contact us via email – pandc@bundabergnorthshs.eq.edu.au

Stymie - #saysomething

What does Stymie do for young people?
Of every 30 young people in Australia seven will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only two will reach out for support. Stymie works with you to give the young people you are working with, the power to say something or ask for help. We are an early intervention initiative that changes and saves lives.
Stymie empowers young people to ask for help when they need support, or if they are seeing or experiencing harm.
Stymie provides online reporting for schools. Encrypted, anonymous notifications are delivered within seconds to authorised recipients, who respond according to their wellbeing framework. The notification provides the option to include screenshots or images that validate the notification.
Being able to anonymously report, relieves feelings of helplessness for those who want to help their peers but don’t quite know how. Our purpose is to support you in creating an environment where harm can be minimised and effective action can be maximised.
Stymie can be used by anybody. It does not have to be a student at our school. The link to make a notification is on the school website front page
