From the Principal's Office

Bundaberg North SHS turns 50 this year. We are very pleased to be welcoming back all 7 of the past Principals to our 50th Anniversary Celebration on June 1st. Our founding Principal Mr Tom Dobson from 1974, will be coming to the celebration along with Mr Brian Rout, Mr Greg Johnson, Mrs Debbie Best, Mrs Shirley Johnson and Mr Ross Robertson. One Principal Stuart Cochrane, is unable to attend on the celebration day but is coming to see the school next week and will take a walk through the grounds and meet staff on Friday. The organisation for the 50th celebration and opening of the time capsule is in full swing and I thank those who have been assisting with the planning. We are looking forward to welcoming many past students and staff back to North. Please see our website for details.
Term 1 progress reports have now been issued to all students. It is important to take time to check student progress in academic achievement, behaviour and effort and for students to setting new targets for Term 2. I encourage parents to make Student Progress Conference bookings with teachers if they would like to discuss individual subject progress – Student Progress Conferences are being held Friday May 10 (1.30pm – 4.00pm). We apologise for the change of day but hope that any previous bookings have been able to be rescheduled. If you haven't yet booked, the link below will be open until lunchtime on Thursday 9th May.
In Term 1, our school had its 4 yearly School Review. The School Review report has now been received and the executive summary is on our website. The School Review report plays an integral part and basis of our school’s next 4 year Strategic Plan. The School Council, P&C, Leadership team, staff and students will be working on developing a new vision for North High and creating the Strategic Plan in semester 2 ready for the start of 2025. As I mentioned at the end of term 1, I will be taking the leave at the end of this semester and a new Principal will be appointed. The new Principal will lead the work in unpacking the School Review report and developing the vision for our future at North High. This is an exciting time for North High.

Reach for the Sky / North Star Award ceremonies
Over the last two weeks we have recognised the outstanding achievements of our students. Last week the year 10 – 12 students and this week our year 7 – 9 students, who achieved either a Reach for the Sky award or North Star award or both! Well done to these students; you should be proud of your efforts! To achieve one of these awards, students have demonstrated commitment to their studies, and demonstrated the school values of respect, responsibility and safety. Check out the photos on our Facebook page of these amazing students!
Reward Day 1: Wednesday 22 May
Congratulations to the 116 students who have qualified for the first Reward Day on Wednesday 22 May. With high standards requiring students to have achieved a Reach for the Sky award and 90% actual attendance. Students have been asked to choose one of the following:

For students who choose abseiling or the beach trip, their parents/carers will be sent an electronic permission to complete. Exact times and items to bring etc, will be confirmed on the permission and to students through notices. We are looking forward to an exciting day! Any questions, please contact Mrs Watson on rwats34@eq.edu.au or 4130 0222.

Bundaberg Careers Expo
On Wednesday 8 May, we had the majority of our Year 10, 11 and 12 students attend the Bundaberg Careers Expo at the Multiplex. It had a wide variety of stall holders from universities and other training providers, to industry representatives from mining and manufacturing through to some of Bundaberg’s biggest employers..
Year 12 Trivia Night NEXT Thursday!
At Bundaberg North State High School, we are proud of our students and their willingness to help others. Specifically this year, the Senior cohort have embarked on a fundraising activity to assist Edon Place and their work with victims of domestic violence. They are raising funds through a trivia night to be held at Bundaberg North State High School on Thursday 16 May 2024.
Funds raised through the participation fee of $5 per person and a continuous raffle at the event, will be donated to Edon Place. Funds raised from a small canteen will contribute to the Senior students’ formal in November this year.
Please get together a team of 6-10 people, book a table, bring some nibblies with you and enjoy a fun night of trivia! It would be advantageous to have a local as there will be one round on 50 years of Bundy North SHS!!
Book a table via QR code or below link.

STEM trip to Maths Gallery and QUT
Students from the Year 10 LEAP class, and Year 11-12 Mathematics Methods classes discovered future STEM-related career paths on an overnight trip Thursday-Friday 18-19 April. The bus’s first stop was at the newly founded Mathema Gallery at Ocean View where students were afforded a tour of the facilities by founder Dr Calvin Irons and explored the displays dedicated to the history and development of mathematics through different cultures over time.
After a short tour of the campus and a guided tour of Southbank by Mrs Hearn and Mr Duncan, students retired for the night at a hostel overlooking Brisbane city. The following day the agenda consisted of using sensors to collect and analyse science data, developing a robotic arm and coding some robots to recycle waste at the QUT cube – one of the world’s largest interactive learning spaces.
Families interested in a similar opportunity over the winter school holidays may be interested in a 5-day immersive program for students at JCU Townsville called “Engineering Futures” more information is available through the following link

Glencore 2025 Apprenticeship presentation
On the 7th of May, year 12 students had the opportunity to attend the Glencore 2025 apprenticeship program presentation. Glencore is a global leader in natural resources, and is currently offering trade apprenticeships across its Australian Coal Operations, beginning in January 2025.
Students learnt about the available trade options, application and selection process, and what it would be like living a Glencore apprenticeship lifestyle. Glencore’s four-year apprenticeship program will allow students to develop skills, experience, and knowledge, and provide students with challenges and opportunities along the way. With onsite, offsite, TAFE training, apprentices interested in higher engineering qualifications will also have the opportunity to apply for an Engineering Traineeship at the end of their Apprenticeship Program. Successful students will have the opportunity to select their preferred state location and apprenticeship stream:
Queensland Coal Operations – Mackay and Emerald region
- Electrician (dual qualification) – Cert III Electrotechnology / Cert IV Engineering
- Diesel Mechanic/Fitter (dual trade) – Cert III Mobile Plant Mechanic / Cert III Mechanical Fitting
- Auto Electrician (dual trade) – Cert III Auto Electrical / Cert III Mobile Plant Mechanic
- Boiler Maker (dual trade) – Cert III Metal Fabrication / Cert III Mechanical Fitting

P&C ask for your uniform donations
My name is Shelly Hansen. I am the President of the BNSHS P&C Association and I am seeking your help. Sadly, there are students at our school whose families are not able to provide them with a uniform. I would like to ask for your assistance by donating any items of North High uniform that your children no longer need. The P&C try to support all requests for assistance but with your help we may be able to extend that support further.
All uniform donations are greatly appreciated, and we thank you for the continued support of our school.
Thank you for your help, Shelly Hansen, P&C President
Callout for volunteers
Can you volunteer some time either at home or in tuckshop?
We have some jobs for the tuckshop that could be completed at home such as cutting foil into squares, cutting burger paper (baking paper), putting labels on bags and more.
We also need assistance in our tuckshop. This can be a background position (not student facing). The jobs could include washing up, stocking fridges/ice cream freezer/spoons and helping with food preparation (cutting salads/fruit).
The main days needed are Tuesday and Thursday from 8am-12noon, but any amount of time from 1 to 4 hours would be extremely helpful.
We can also sign off on your Centrelink, work/volunteer forms.
If you think you could spare some time, please contact us via email – pandc@bundabergnorthshs.eq.edu.au

Stymie - #saysomething

What does Stymie do for young people?
Of every 30 young people in Australia seven will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only two will reach out for support. Stymie works with you to give the young people you are working with, the power to say something or ask for help. We are an early intervention initiative that changes and saves lives.
Stymie empowers young people to ask for help when they need support, or if they are seeing or experiencing harm.
Stymie provides online reporting for schools. Encrypted, anonymous notifications are delivered within seconds to authorised recipients, who respond according to their wellbeing framework. The notification provides the option to include screenshots or images that validate the notification.
Being able to anonymously report, relieves feelings of helplessness for those who want to help their peers but don’t quite know how. Our purpose is to support you in creating an environment where harm can be minimised and effective action can be maximised.
Stymie can be used by anybody. It does not have to be a student at our school. The link to make a notification is on the school website front page
